OUA BY THE NUMBERS: YATES CUP EDITION
102 – Number of times the Yates Cup has been awarded. The Queen's Gaels host the Western Mustangs at Richardson Stadium on Nov. 14 in the 102nd Yates Cup Championship presented by Pioneer Petroleums.
31 – The number of years since the Queen's Gaels last hosted the Yates Cup in 1978, a year that the then-Golden Gaels had a perfect 10-0 season and advanced to one of its three Vanier Cup titles. (Queen's last hosted a conference championship in 1997 when a member of the OQIFC).
1898 – The first year the Yates Cup was awarded. The University of Toronto was the first team to earn the trophy.
10,811 – The number of career passing yards achieved by Western Mustangs quarterback Michael Faulds (Eden Mills, Ont.). The fifth-year quarterback broke both OUA and Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) all-time passing records this season with his achievement.
97 – The number of career passing yards that separate Queen's quarterback Danny Brannagan (Burlington, Ont.) and Faulds. Brannagan is the second-leading career passer in CIS history with 10,714 all-time yards.
28 – The number of Yates Cup championships the Western Mustangs have won since 1898. They had a four-year Yates Cup streak, winning the OUA championship title every year from 1979 to 1982.
7-1 – Queen's regular season record to finish the as the top team in the league, losing just one game to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. The Gaels completed the season at No. 4 in the national ranking, one spot ahead of their Yates Cup opponents, the Western Mustangs.
6-2 – Western's regular season record. The Mustangs began the season on a four-game win streak, but dropped games to the McMaster Marauders and Queen's Gaels.
2002 – The last year Queen's appeared in the Yates Cup championship. The Gaels fell 33-19 to the McMaster Marauders.
22 – The number of times the Gaels have won the Yates Cup. Their first trophy came in 1900 and their last championship was won in 1978.
1977 – The year the Yates Cup was awarded to both the Western Mustangs and Queen's Golden Gaels. In the late 1970s, the Ontario Universities Athletic Association (OUAA) football league to both division champions.
