HAMILTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending September 13, 2009.
OFFENCE: Jordan Wilson-Ross, Ottawa Gee-Gees, Running Back
The first-year running back rushed for 232 yards and two touchdowns in just his second OUA contest in a 45-11 road win at Waterloo on Sept. 12. A 20-year-old from Alliston, Ont. who played 10 games last year at Nassau Community College (Garden City, N.Y.) and is a prospect for the Canadian men's senior rugby team, Wilson-Ross produced touchdown runs of 10 yards in the first quarter and 33 yards in the second before finishing with the third-highest rushing total in Ottawa football program history, behind Bill Harrison's 277 yards in 1974 and Davie Mason's CIS playoff-record 372 yards in 2008. Wilson-Ross is also the Pioneer Petroleums OUA Male Athlete of the Week.
DEFENCE: Conor Elliott, Western Mustangs, Linebacker
Second-year linebacker Elliott (London, Ont.) led the Western Mustangs defence with a pair of interceptions, a forced fumble and three total tackles (two solo, two assisted) in a 30-7 win over the No. 6-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Sept. 12. Elliott and the Western defence were dominant, with Laurier scoring its only points with 21 seconds remaining in the game after many Mustangs defensive starters had been subbed out for second-string players.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Darryl Wheeler, Western Mustangs, Punter/Kicker
Wheeler (Hamilton, Ont.) helped the Western Mustangs to hold off the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks until the closing seconds of the game with effective punting, averaging over 40 yards a boot. The sophomore kicker also added a field goal and three extra points along with two special teams tackles in the 30-7 win over the No. 6-ranked Golden Hawks. Wheeler kicked for 409 yards on 10 punts including one inside the 20-yard line.
