OUA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENCE: Nathan Riva, Western Mustangs, Running Back
Western Mustangs running back Nathan Riva had a season-high 171 rushing yards on 25 attempts and one touchdown in a 37-18 OUA quarter-final win over the Guelph Gryphons. The LaSalle, Ont., native also had two catches for 26 yards for 197 all-purpose yards. Riva also made two great blocks on blitzing Guelph linemen to protect quarterback Michael Faulds.
DEFENCE: Conor Elliott, Western Mustangs, Linebacker
Conor Elliott (London, Ont.) led the Western Mustangs defence with nine total tackles (five solo, four assisted) and intercepted one pass and returned it 45 yards in the third quarter in Western’s 37-18 OUA quarter-final victory over the Guelph Gryphons. The play set up a Darryl Wheeler field goal to put Western ahead 30-11.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Darryl Wheeler, Western Mustangs, Kicker/Punter
The Western Mustangs defeated the Guelph Gryphons 37-18 thanks in large part to an accurate performance from kicker Darryl Wheeler (Hamilton, Ont.). He hit all four of his field goal attempts despite wind speeds that approached 50 km/h throughout the game, including a career long 41-yarder. He was Western's leading scorer on the day, accounting for 15 points. He also had eight punts for 269 yards including one that pinned Guelph at its own two-yard line.
