GOLDEN HAWKS DEFEAT LANCERS IN OUA FOOTBALL
"It was a great first half and a very poor second half," commented Laurier manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries after the game. "We just lost focus."
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead on receiving touchdowns from Alex Anthony (Victoria, B.C.) and Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.). Laurier then picked up a safety after pinning the Lancers deep in their own zone. Chris Mamo (London, Ont.) hit a 40-yard field goal to give the home team a 19-0 advantage.
The purple and gold then made it 26-0 on a receiving touchdown from fullback Peter Quinney (Belleville, Ont.), with 12 seconds left in the first half. Quinney received the Chris Worden Memorial Award at the beginning of the game recognizing the fallen RCMP Hawk.
The Hawks continued to dominate Windsor in the second half with a Mike Montoya (Burlington, Ont.) 49 yard rushing touchdown off a third down convert in which the running back flipped over the pile and kept going into the end zone. The touchdown was the sixth of the season for the running back.
"We got beat pretty badly by their running game and that didn't make us too happy," said Windsor head coach Mike Morience.
Laurier had 397 net yards rushing in the match with Montoya picking up 207 of them.
"We ran the ball with three different backs today and they did a good job," said Jeffries on the ground game.
The Hawks other two running backs, Jim Martyniuk (Burlington, Ont.) and Julius Jones-Carter (Brampton, Ont.), picked up 84 and 54 yards respectively.
"We still have the fumble problems that we have to take care of," said Jeffries. "There are a lot of things we have to get cleaned up."
Montoya was charged with two fumbles in the game, one coming on the one-yard line.
Laurier was also in penalty trouble with 15 penalties for 130 yards being called against the Hawks.
"Penalties took the momentum away, but we aren't going to put up with it," commented Jeffries.
Quarterback Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.) had a solid outing going 12-of-17 for 202 yards and three touchdowns.
Dillon Heap led all players with 279 all-purpose yards including 110 receiving, 56 on kick returns, 41 rushing and 72 on punt returns. The third year wide out is now only 61 yards away from breaking Paul Bennett's Laurier season record for punt returns set in 1976.
Chris Mamo also hit a milestone by moving out of a tie with Brian Devlin in career converts to take over first place with 106.
On the defensive side of the ball the Hawks were led Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) who had 6.5 tackles and Courtney Stephen (Brampton, Ont.) who had six. Stephen also had two knockdowns in the game.
For the Lancers, Sam Malian (LaSalle, Ont.) led the way going 22-of-44 for 276 yards and two majors. He was also the Lancers leading rusher with 35 yards. His favourite target was Cory Fernandes (Mississauga, Ont.) who had five receptions for 71 yards.
The Windsor defence was led by John Celestino (Windsor, Ont.) who had 12 tackles on the day. Seamus Postuma (Thunder Bay, Ont.) also had a solid outing with 7.5 tackles and two sacks.
"We got the win, but we'll have to be better in Guelph," concluded Jeffries.
Next up, Laurier will travel to Guelph to take on the Gryphons on Sat., Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
