MARTIN SIGNS ON WITH NFL'S CHARGERS
LONDON, Ont. - Former Western Mustangs defensive lineman Vaughn Martin has signed a four-year contract with the National Football League's San Diego Chargers.
Taken in the fourth round (113th overall) of the 2009 NFL draft, the six-foot-three, 331-pound Martin was the first Canadian collegiate player to be drafted as an underclassman to the NFL, playing just two seasons at Western.
The Jamaican-born Martin is a product of South Secondary School and was a major force behind Western's back-to-back Yates Cup victories in 2007 and 2008. Contract details have not been released.
The Chargers open training camp on July 31, with rookies like Martin reporting earlier in the week. San Diego begins its 2009 regular season Sept. 14 at Oakland.
