HAMILTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 12, 2009.
OFFENCE: Dan Brannagan, Queen’s Gaels, Quarterback
Brannagan (Burlington, Ont.) became the OUA’s all-time passing leader in a 43-21 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Oct. 10. Brannagan threw for 347 yards to surpass McMaster’s Ben Chapdelaine’s eight-year old record of 9,974 yards. The fifth-year quarterback now has 9,989 career passing yards, leaving him just 11 shy of becoming only the second Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) quarterback to eclipse the 10,000-yard mark. The No. 4 Queen’s Gaels host the No. 5 Western Mustangs this Saturday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m., a game that can be seen nationally on The Score Television Network. Brannagan has been named OUA offensive football player of the week three times this season.
DEFENCE: David Rooney, Queen’s Gaels, Defensive Back
Rooney (Kingston, Ont.) was a defensive force for the No. 4 Queen’s Gaels in their 43-21 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Oct. 10. The education major led the Gaels with nine solo tackles and returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown. The interception was his third in the last two games while his touchdown was the first of his OUA career. This is his second straight OUA defensive player of the week honour.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Matt Falvo, Ottawa Gee-Gees, Punter/Kicker
The second-year punter/kicker had five converts and four field goals in a 50-26 victory over the then No. 9 Guelph Gryphons on Oct. 9. Falvo (Welland, Ont.) hit field goals of nine, 15, 37 and 42 yards. His longest punt was 53 yards. Falvo is 16-of-20 in field goal attempts this season, good for third in OUA. He is also third in OUA scoring with 67 points. The Ottawa Gee-Gees have replaced Guelph at No. 9 in the CIS national rankings.
