FORMER VARSITY BLUES FOOTBALL PLAYER TO TAKE PART IN OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY
Hipsz played five seasons (1992-1996) for the Varsity Blues and was named an OUA second team all-star at defensive end in his last two seasons. He was a member of the 1993 Vanier Cup winning team that was honoured last year at Varsity Centre – 15 years after their glorious win at the SkyDome (now Rogers Centre).
A recreation and fitness co-ordinator at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ont., Hipsz was chosen for his work as a member of the Esteem Team, a group that connects athletes to students for motivational purposes.
Drafted by the Montreal Alouettes in the fourth round (26th overall) of the 1996 CFL Canadian College draft, Hipsz went on to play six seasons in the CFL, including a short stint with the Argonauts in 2000, before retiring in 2002.
The Olympic Torch relay, which begins on October 30th in Victoria, B.C., will make its way across the country and back to the west coast for the start of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
It's scheduled to be in the Greater Toronto Area Dec. 17-19. Each torch-bearer will carry the torch for approximately 300 metres.
