MARAUDERS SOAR OVER WARRIORS IN FOOTBALL OPENER
It was McMaster's first sell out since Oct. 2, 2004, when McMaster hosted Guelph as a part of homecoming and the old Les Prince Field, and the first complete sell out at Ron Joyce Stadium.
McMaster avenged a 30-17 loss at the hands of Waterloo in week 2 of the 2008 season as a part of the grand opening of Warrior field.
This was the first appearance for the University of Waterloo at Ron Joyce Stadium which opened in the fall of 2008.
After a sluggish first half by both teams, McMaster took a 12-7 lead into the locker room.
The Marauders exploded with 33-unanswered points in the second half to solidify the victory.
The McMaster defence held the warriors to 291 yards of net offence (119 rushing and 171 passing), while McMaster generated 557 yards of net offence (306 rushing and 280 passing) on the afternoon.
McMaster rookie defensive backs, Stephen Dennis (Burlington, Ont.) and Cody Lynch (Stoney Creek, Ont.) had interceptions for the Greg Knox-led defence. Ryan Chmielewski (St. Catharines, Ont.), a former OUA rookie of the year now in this third year of eligibility, also added an interception for the Marauders.
Offensively, the McMaster running back tandem of Jordan Kozina (Brantford, Ont.) and Joey Nemet (Burlington, Ont.) had a solid outing behind the McMaster offensive line. Kozina had 18 carries for 149 yards while Nemet had 17 carries for 88 yards.
Waterloo rookie Matt Socholotiuk (Waterford, Ont.) led the Warriors in rushing with 33 yards on five carries.
Marauder quarterback Ryan Fantham (London, Ont.) who was named the starter last week, completed 16-of-26 passes for 234 yards and four touchdowns and one interception.
Waterloo quarterback Evan Martin (Kitchener, Ont.) completed 11-of-18 passes for 62 yards, throwing three interceptions, while being sacked four times, and fumbling the ball on one occasion.
Waterloo second year, six-foot-four quarterback Jon Roney (North Vancouver, B.C.) Completed eight passes for 109 yards and a touchdown in relief of Martin.
McMaster fourth year receiver Kevin D'Hollander (London, Ont.) and third-year pass catcher Matthew Peressini (Hannon, Ont.) scored two touchdowns. D'Hollander snared three passes for 103 yards. Peressini earned 46 yards on four receptions while rushing for 24 yards on two carries. Rookie Mike DiCroce (Hamilton, Ont.) had four catches for 56 yards.
Waterloo's all-time leading receiver Sean Cowie (Dundas, Ont.), playing in his fifth year of eligibility, led the Warriors with eight catches for 82 yards. Fourth-year receiver Luke Balch (London, Ont.) and third-year receiver Andrew Ward (Mississauga, Ont.) scored touchdowns for the Warriors.
McMaster second-year quarterback Kyle Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.) and second-year fullback John Hartnett (Hamilton, Ont.) both scored their first career touchdowns in a Marauder jersey.
Third-year Waterloo linebacker Brian Adams (Kitchener, Ont.) blocked a punt and rumbled 35 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Third-year McMaster kicker Andy Waugh (Perth, Ont.) contributed 12 points on two field goals, five converts and a single. Waugh also punted for 222 yards on five attempts for a 44.4 yard average and made a potential touchdown saving tackle.
The Waterloo Warriors (0-1) will host the No. 10-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees (0-1) on Sat., Sept. 12 at 1 p.m.
McMaster will travel to Kingston next Saturday to face the No. 8-ranked Queen's Gaels (1-0) at 1 p.m. at Richardson stadium.
