NO. 10 MARAUDERS A PERFECT 10 AGAINST VARSITY BLUES IN FOOTBALL
HAMILTON, Ont. - The No. 10 nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 21-3 in front of 2,679 fans in a rare Thursday night game at Ron Joyce Stadium, leading into the Thanksgiving weekend.
McMaster has now defeated the University of Toronto in ten consecutive contests.
McMaster improves to 4-2 on the season. The University of Toronto stands at 1-5.
McMaster held a slim 6-3 lead at the half before McMaster quarterback and OUA Offensive Player of the Week Kyle Quinlan (South Woodsley, Ont.) connected on a 51-yard passing play to running back Jordan Kozina (Brantford, Ont.) at the nine minute mark of the third quarter. The reception set up a 10-yard rushing touchdown from McMaster running back Joey Netmet (Burlington, Ont.) to put McMaster up 13-3 and in control of the game.
For the Varsity Blues the scenario was all too familiar. Toronto has trailed two other teams by close margins at the half this season including the No. 9 Guelph Gryphons (9-7) and the University of Ottawa (15-9).
Quinlan would finish the game with 275 yards on 19 receptions in 30 attempts, including one touchdown and an interception.
Kozina rushed for 63 yards on 14 carries. Nemet finished the game with 38 yards rushing on nine attempts.
McMaster fifth year receiver Matt Giordano (Hamilton, Ont.) had a team high five receptions for 50 yards. Matt Peressini (Hannon, Ont.) hauled in a 21 yard touchdown reception for the Marauders.
University of Toronto quarterback Jansen Shrubb (Toronto) passed for 250 yards on 20 completions in 47 attempts for Blues.
University of Toronto receiver Drew Meerveld (Guelph, Ont.) had 11 receptions for 153 yards. Meerveld led the OUA in receptions with 28 on the season coming into the game.
The McMaster defence held Toronto to 299 net yards. McMaster was ranked third in the OUA in defence limiting opponents to 365.6 yards per game prior to this evening.
The McMaster defence was powered by Ryan Chmielewski (St. Catharines, Ont.) who had seven tackles. Chmielewski was ranked fifth in tackles (29) and tied for fifth in sacks (three) in the OUA after week five of the season.
Defensively, the Varsity Blues received a strong individual performance from two-time OUA defensive all-star and OUA special teams all-star Derek Batchelor (Mississauga, Ont.) who had nine solo tackles. Wilkerson D'Souza (Mississauga, Ont.) had seven tackles, one assisted tackle and a sack. Scott Smith (Toronto) picked up an interception on the game.

Toronto will host the University of Waterloo (1-4) on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
McMaster (4-2) will travel to Windsor next Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. to play the Windsor Lancers (2-3).
