OUA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENCE: Dan Brannagan, Queen's Gaels, Quarterback
Brannagan (pictured) of Burlington, Ont.) was outstanding in his return to the line-up on Saturday. The fifth-year quarterback had his best game in a Gaels uniform throwing for 543 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran for another touchdown as Queen's defeated the York Lions 67-0. Brannagan's career-high 543 passing yards in a single game is the fourth most all-time in OUA history. Brannagan is also the Pioneer Petroleums OUA Male Athlete of the Week.
DEFENCE: Jordan Verdone, Waterloo Warriors, Linebacker
Verdone (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), a second-year political science student, led the Warriors to a 49-0 shut out win over Windsor on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field. Verdone, the OUA and CIS rookie of the year in 2008, had a team high 5.5 total tackles and had one interception helping the Warriors defence blank the Lancers.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Dillon Heap, Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, Returner
The third-year player had a stand out performance with 420 all-purpose yards as the Golden Hawks defeated the Marauders 30-14 on Saturday. The Waterloo native's 179 punt return yards set a new Laurier single-game record, breaking Geoff Keen's mark of 134 yards set in 2002. Heap also set a new Laurier record for kick return yardage in a season with 334 yards, surpassing Ian Logan's 2004 mark of 327. He had 111 kick return yards against McMaster. The business major picked up his remaining 130 yards on four receptions, one of which was good for a touchdown.
