OUA ANNOUNCES WEST MEN'S BASKETBALL ALL-STARS
HAMILTON, ON - With four teams remaining in the OUA West men's basketball division, Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce the 2004-05 all-stars and major award winners as selected by the coaches.
Taking home OUA West Player of the Year honours is fourth-year forward Kevin Stienstra, from the Brock University Badgers. The Vineland, ON native ranks in the top three of four OUA statistical categories, including points at 19.00 per game (third in the OUA) and 9.73 rebounds per game (third in the OUA). His 63.0% shooting from the field, places him second in the league, as does his 2.36 blocks per game. The three-time OUA all-star has helped lead the Badgers to a number two ranking in Canada and a first round bye in the OUA West playoffs.
Last year's OUA West Player of the Year, Adam Guiney (Windsor, ON), from McMaster University, was named to the OUA West all-star first team. The fifth-year forward ranked first in the country in field goal shooting at 65.6%. Graham Jarman, of the University of Waterloo Warriors earned his first OUA West all-star selection. The Cambridge native led the seventh-ranked Warriors with 15.33 points per game. Also earning his first all-star nod was Lakehead University's Kiraan Posey (Baltimore, Maryland). The league's leading scorer at 20.68 points per game has helped boost the Thunderwolves into the second round of the playoffs and one win away from the CIS championship in Halifax. Rounding off the top five is Badger Kevin French (Burlington, ON). The fifth-year player is honoured for the first time and has been instrumental in the Brock's successful season, averaging 14.86 points per game.
Matt Curtis, from The University of Western Ontario Mustangs, was named the OUA West Rookie of the Year. Leading his team in minutes, the Hamilton native averaged 9.1 points per game and has given Mustang fans hope to regain their OUA West competitiveness after a 5-15 year.
McMaster Marauder Martin Ajayi's tenacious defense earned him OUA West Defensive Player of the Year. The Mohawk College transfer from Hamilton becomes the inaugural recipient of the award for averaging 1.91 steals per game and heading up McMaster's press.
For the first time since the 1991-92 season, Ken Murray, head coach of the Brock Badgers, was honoured as OUA West Coach of the Year. That same season, Murray was named CIS Coach of the Year, guiding the Badgers to a national title. The 15-year head coach has taken his team to a No. 2 ranking in the nation and an impressive 19-3 record.
After two upsets Wednesday night, the OUA men's basketball playoffs, presented by Investors Group, continues Saturday. The top ranked West team, Waterloo, host Lakehead while the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks travel to St. Catharines to take on the Brock Badgers in OUA West semi-final action.
