MENTOR TAKES ROUND ONE
Toronto however wasn't able to dethrone the reigning two-time OUA and CIS Champion Carleton Ravens, falling 68-56. Raven Osvaldo Jeanty led all scorers with 24 points. The third-year guard, who was the only Raven to meet double digits, also added six rebounds and three assists. Like Jeanty, only Toronto's Mike Degiorgio reached double figures, scoring 14 for the Blues. The second-year guard contributed six rebounds and four assists.
The Ravens continued their winning ways Saturday, downing the Ryerson Rams, 78-64. Jeanty again led Carleton with 20 points in 27 minutes of action. Aaron Doornekamp followed up with 14 and eight boards. The winless Rams had three players in double figures as Duane Benjamin and Vladimir Matevski each netted 13 points. With the win, Carleton extends their CIS/OUA regular and post-season winning streak to 65 games.
MAC WINS FIFTH IN SIX GAMES
The McMaster Marauders, who had a three-game losing streak in November, has started 2005 on the right note taking five of their last six games. The two victories this week - 73-71 nail biter over Laurier and an 82-64 win over last place Western - puts the Marauders in third place in the OUA West. Adam Steiner's 24 points and eight rebounds led the way against the Mustangs. Adam Guiney followed up with 19 points and nine boards. Rookie forward Brad Smith from Western netted 21 points on 10-of-16 shooting.
YORK'S NUMBER IS 75
The York Lions took a firm grasp on second place in the OUA East this weekend with two big wins as the Toronto team scored 75 points in each contest. Against the visiting RMC Paladins, the Lions came away with a 75-69 victory, led by Jordan Foebel's 15 points, and eight rebounds. The national leader in blocks added six more to his season total, bringing him to an average of 2.44 blocks per game. Foebel, number one in OUA rebounding with 12.75 per game, went up against the player chasing him, Kevin Dulude (10.87 per game). Kevin Dulude added 13 rebounds and 18 points for the double-double, but it was not enough as the Lions claimed victory and Foebel held onto the OUA rebounding race.
Saturday night, the Lions needed overtime to overcome the Queen's Golden Gaels 75-71. Down by one, York's Foebel was sent to the free throw line with a chance to win the game. The third-year forward connected on 1-of-2 to send the game into overtime. In the extra frame, Lions guard Branislav Misovic connected to two key three-pointers, before Foebel was once again sent to the line. This time Foebel hit both and sealed the victory. Foebel finished the game with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Teammate Dan Eves had a team-high 22 points, while point guard Tut Rauch contributed 16 points and seven assists. Gael Neal Dawson led all scorers with 26 points and led his team in rebounding with 12.
WARRIORS TAKE FOURTH IN A ROW
The Waterloo Warriors won their fourth game in a row as they downed cross-town rivals, the Laurier Golden Hawks, 68-64. In a tight game that saw the lead change hands seven times and tied on six occasions, the Warriors were able to outlast a last minute charge by the Hawks. With less than 2 minutes to go, the Waterloo lead had been cut to three, but with time about to expire on the shot clock, Mike Sovran hit an open three-pointer to push the lead to six. Graham Jarman had a game-high 22 points. Dave Munkley added 19 points, as well as six rebounds and five steals. For the Hawks, who fall to 7-7 Bert Riviere led his team both in scoring (14 points) and rebounding (11 boards).
LAKEHEAD AND GUELPH SPLIT
The Lakehead Thunderwolves and Guelph Gryphons split their weekend series in Guelph this weekend as both teams, along with Laurier, sit tied for fourth place in the OUA West with 7-7 records. Friday nigh, Guelph stormed away with the 74-56 win. Jeff Rosar, playing his former team, hit 9-of-11 from the field for 26 points, adding nine rebounds in the process. Fellow Gryphon J.S. Esposito netted 16. For Lakehead, the OUA leading scorer Kiraan Posey, who is averaging just over 20 points per game, had a team-high 17 points.
Saturday, Posey led the Thunderwolves to a 74-73 overtime win against the same Gryphons. The second-year guard recorded 24 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Lakehead had the hot hand in the extra frame, hitting 6-of-7 from the field to seal the one-point victory. Guelph's Esposito had a game-high 26 points and adding five rebounds. The Thunderwolves held ex-Lakehead star Jeff Rosar to a respectable 13 points and five rebounds.
BROCK DOWNS WINDSOR, 72-67
With just seven players seeing the court and two players playing the entire 40 minutes, the Brock Badgers pulled out the 72-67 win over the Windsor Lancers Saturday. Scott Murray and Ryan Walker led the OUA West second place Badgers with 17 points apiece. Kevin Stienstra and Morgan Fairweather each recorded 40 minutes of playing time, with Stienstra scoring 13 points and 14 rebounds in the win. For the Lancers, Ryan Steer netted a game-high 20 points, with rookie Ezekiel Egbo had 10 points and nine rebounds in the loss.
LAURENTIAN OUTLASTS RMC
Kevin Dulude's 33 points and 13 rebounds was not enough to stop the Laurentian Voyageurs as RMC fell 59-56. Dulude, last year's OUA East MVP, was the only Paladin to reach double figures in the contest as the Kingston school continues to struggle this season with a 3-13 record. For Laurentian, Andrew Greig had team-highs with 20 points and five rebounds. Ben Palmer added 15 in the Voyageur's first win of 2005.
Laurentian fell 67-62 to the Queen's Golden Gaels. Despite not allowing a Queen's basket in the first 12 minutes of the contest, Laurentian could not hold onto 25-15 halftime lead. Neal Dawson scored 15 for the visiting Gaels, while Voyageur Ben Palmer led all scorers with 16.
