LANCER BASKETBALL TIPS-OFF IN SUPPORT OF TSUNAMI RELIEF EFFORTS
Friday night's games will also be in support of the victims of the Tsunami disaster, as proceeds from the gate as well as additional donations will be given to help with the Red Cross' relief efforts.
On the Men's side, the Lancers are in the hunt for an OUA playoff berth, but consistency will be the key in securing one. The Lancers currently sit with a 4-4 record, tied with Guelph and McMaster, good for 3rd place in the OUA West Division. The team has played well under interim coach, Pat Osborne, ending the 1st half with a win over arch rival Western in London. Osborne has been impressed with the team's ability to adapt to a new system and style of play. He describes the team as a "work in progress."
The Lancers have been led offensively by Trevor Boose, who is averaging close to 20 points per game and sits 9th in the country in scoring and Ryan Steer who has chipped in with 13 per game. Rich Allin and Al Mujacic have been an inside force under the basket for the Lancers. Allin is the team's top rebounder, grabbing 6 boards a game. "We will be looking for more consistent scoring off the bench in the second half in order to make some noise towards the playoffs" said Coach Osborne.
On the women's side, the Lancers hope that the Christmas break was enough time for some of their starters to get healthy for the remainder of the regular season.
Windsor went into the break on a winning note, downing Waterloo 58-50 and looks to build on that success. The Lancers control their own playoff fortunes with 2 games remaining this half against Lakehead and the season finale at home against Waterloo, the two teams they are battling for the 6th and final playoff spot in the OUA West division.
Interim Head Coach Blake Handsor knows the team will need to play well down the stretch to grab that playoff spot, but he believes the team can do it with all they have overcome so far. "There is always an adjustment period when you bring in a new coach, and then add in all the injuries we have had, but the girls have never given up. They are a very hard working team" says Handsor.
Stacey Newbigging has been a force inside averaging close to six rebounds a game while Tatiana Danelon has been one of the team's leading scorers this season averaging 7 points per game. Both have been hampered by injuries this season but look to have strong finishes and lead the team into the playoffs. The team will also be counting on the return of Celina Boswell from knee surgery to help the attack.
