RAVENS AND GEE-GEES BOTH START OFF AT 2-0
Carleton isn’t the only team in the nation’s capital with a perfect start. The Ottawa Gee-Gees are also 2-0 after defeating the Thunderwolves 72-68 Friday and then pulling out a dramatic last-second 65-64 win over the sixth-ranked Marauders on a clutch three-pointer from fourth-year player Alex McLeod. McLeod took a feed and put up the winning shot right in front of his bench, prompting the Gee-Gees to pour onto the court. Jermaine Campbell led Ottawa with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while second team all-star Adam Steiner had 21 for the 0-2 Marauders.
The Toronto Varsity Blues won both of their home games to start the season, beating the Windsor Lancers 80-68 Friday at the U of T Sports Gym and then defeating the Western Mustangs 68-53 the following night. Paul Sergautis had 19 points Mo Safarzadeh had 18 to pace the Blues, while Michael Williams added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds in the win. Windsor’s Kevin Kloostra led all scorers with 23. Sergautis and Safarzadeh each had 15 points against the Mustangs, with Williams had another 13 and a game-high 10 boards.
The Lancers responded to the Toronto loss by beating the Ryerson Rams 79-78 Saturday night at Kerr Hall. Kloostra had 17 points, while Hoy Monk chipped in 13 to go along with his 11 rebounds. Duane Benjamin led Ryerson with 20 points. The loss dropped the Rams to 1-1, their first win of the year coming Friday in a tight 55-53 victory over the Mustangs. Benjamin again led all scorers with 16 points. Igor Bakovic had a poor shooting night for the Rams hitting on just three of 11 field goals but the 6-10 Toronto native made up it for it on the glass, tearing down a game-high 13 rebounds. Bradley Smith was Western’s top scorer with 13 points.
The Guelph Gryphons had an easy time, taking two lopsided decisions on the weekend, 74-42 over the RMC Paladins Friday and 54-28 over the Queen’s Golden Gaels Saturday. John Ross Bailey led Guelph in both of the games, scoring 12 points with six rebounds against RMC and then adding 18 points and eight boards against the Gaels, both Game highs.
Brad Rootes poured in 28 points and Kevin Steinstra added 21 more as the Brock Badgers improved to 2-1 with a 64-59 win over the Golden Gaels Friday. Rootes also had 11 rebounds, while Neal Dawson had 12 points and seven assists for Queen’s.
