BROCK TAKES TWO TO PULL INTO FIRST PLACE TIE
Friday night Brock nearly doubled up on RMC, 80-44. Brock's Kevin Steinstra, the second leading scorer in the OUA, fell just short of a triple-double with 10 points, 15 rebounds, and nine blocks. A trio of Badgers, Brad Rootes, Morgan Fairweather (who connected on 4-of-7 from beyond the arc) and Kevin French, totalled 14 points a piece.The Paladins, who were without 2004's OUA East Player of the Year Kevin Dulude, struggled to score as Adam Asquini's 15 points led the 2-10 Kingston squad.
The next night it was much of the same with Brock downing Queen's 83-53. Steinstra again had a big night, pouring in 22 points, while point guard Brad Rootes scored 17 of his own and added 10 assists for the double-double. Neal Dawson led the Gaels with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Gaels fell twice this weekend, as Guelph squeaked by them 61-58. Jeff Rosar paced the Gryphons with 20 points with rookie guard Nick Pankerichan scoring 11 and dishing out seven assists. For Queen's, Dawson again led the charge with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
#3 WATERLOO CONTINUES TO IMPRESS
In the third-ranked Waterloo win over Laurentian, Andrew Coatsworth recorded his own double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Gerard Magennis netted a team-high 18 points. For the Sudbury school, who fell to 3-9, Matt Brown scored 23, with Ben Palmer chipping in with 20 points and nine rebounds in the loss.
MAC HITS CENTURY MARK
McMaster hit the century mark this weekend, defeating the winless Ryerson Ram 101-88 in Toronto. Last year's OUA West Player of the Year Adam Guiney sparked the Marauders scoring 24 points. The fifth-year forward was perfect from the field (7-of-7) as the only two shots he missed all game was from the charity stripe (8-of-10). Rob Scully added 21 for McMaster, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. For the Rams, who pushed their winless streak to 34 OUA games, Peeter Veltman scored 18.
The Marauders continued their winning ways Sunday, downing Toronto 72-65. In McMaster's first game against Toronto's new head coach, Mike Katz, father of injured Marauder Ben Katz, Adam Steiner recorded a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Mike Williams led the Varsity Blues, 5-7 on the season, with 19 points and 10 boards.
The Blues did secure a 89-67 win over Lakehead this weekend. The Toronto squad displayed a balanced attack with four players reaching double figures. Kenny Hilborn was tops with 17, with Paul Sergautis netted 16. Toronto did have difficulty containing the OUA leading scorer Kiraan Posey who dropped 21 points in the loss.
OTTAWA SCHOOLS DOWN WESTERN
Mustang Kyle Coatsworth's 19 points was not enough as the Ottawa Gee-Gees defeated the Western Mustangs 74-61 in London. Gee-Gee Jermaine Campbell had a solid outing with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists. Carleton had the same result against the Mustangs, taking the convincing 74-51 win. Jean-Emmanuel Jean-Marie led the Ravens with 18 points and seven rebounds. Three other Carleton players recorded double digits in the win.
LANCERS SPLIT NATION'S CAPITAL
One night after falling 69-39 to the defending CIS champion Carleton Ravens, the Windsor Lancers defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees in a 69-67 thriller. Trevor Boose, the fourth leading scorer in the OUA, netted 20 in the win as the Lancers move to 5-5 on the season. Ryan Steer contributed 14 points and eight assists. Third-year forward Jermaine Campbell's 21 points, 10 rebounds and four assists wasn't enough for the Gee-Gees.
Against the Ravens, Windsor had trouble offensively as only five players made their way onto the scoresheet. Allen Mujacic, with his 16 points, was the only Lancer to score in double figures. Raven guard Osvaldo Jeanty netted 20 on the night.
