YORK AND CAPE BRETON TAKE GOLD AT RAPTORS INVITAIONAL
Fourth-year centre Jordan Foebel recorded his second double-double in three nights, totaling game highs of 17 points and a tournament-record 23 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end. The fourth-year history major from Ancaster, Ontario was the easy choice for RIT 2005 Most Valuable Player. In the championship game, Foebel was a dominant force inside.
“I wasn’t scoring early so I had to rebound and get more involved,” expressed Foebel. “Staying aggressive made my offensive game come easier.”
York opened the game on a 13-0 run and outrebounded the Badgers 22-12 in the first half to take a 30-21 lead in the lockerroom. Brock shot just .259 (7-27) in the opening half and turned the ball over eight times. York extended the lead to 17 points (48-31) midway through the second half but costly turnovers helped the Badgers claw away at the deficit. Brock guard Mike Kemp netted a team-high 15 points to go along with five rebounds.
The Cape Breton Capers, ranked 10th in the country and seeded third in the women’s bracket, captured RIT 2005, with a 63-52 win over McMaster at Air Canada Centre. Fifth-year forward Maureen Murrin was named Tournament MVP, averaging 15.3 points and 6.0 rebounds in the three-day event, including a game-best 18 points and 11 rebounds in the gold medal game.
Cape Breton outrebounded the Marauders 46-20, including a 17-4 edge on the offensive glass. The Capers went to the line 16 more times than McMaster (22-6), including 11 by Murrin. The inside presence of rookie centre Cecilia Romero helped the Capers cause. The 6-1 native of Mexico City recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Cape Breton outscored the Marauders 24-6 in the paint en route to a 31-21 halftime lead. The Marauders turned the ball over 10 times, accounting for 11 Cape Breton points in the first half.
Memorial forward Katherine Quackenbush recorded game highs of 21 points and seven steals as the second-seed Sea-Hawks captured the women's bronze medal with a 63-46 win over Guelph. The Gryphons shot just .262 (17-65) from the field and managed only 25 points from their starters. Second-year guard/forward Sarah Teeter led all Gryphons with 17 points, including three triples, coming off the bench, to go along with eight rebounds. Memorial scored 25 points off of 31 Guelph turnovers but were outrebounded 44-25. The Sea-Hawks led by as many as 25 points and finished the tournament with a 2-1 record.
In the men’s bronze medal game, McMaster dominated from the opening tip, took advantage of a depleted Humber lineup and cruised to a 96-65 win. The Marauders used solid passing, with 15 assists and shot .561 (23-41) from the field in the first half. Four of McMaster's starters netted double-digit points before halftime as the third-seed Marauders took a 58-34 lead into the lockerroom. McMaster outrebounded the Hawks 50-26 and led by as many as 41 points. Players of the game were Humber forward Jonathan Wyse (15 points, six rebounds) and McMaster forward Andrew Losier (eight points nine rebounds). The bronze medal games were played prior to the Raptors Fan Fest at Air Canada Centre.
