YATES CUP BY THE NUMBERS
100- The number representing the 100th Yates Cup this Saturday, November 10th at Alumni Stadium in Guelph at 1:00 pm, featuring the hosts, University of Guelph and the University of Western Ontario.
10- The number of years that the Yates Cup was not awarded due to World War I and World War II. Between the years of 1915-1919 and 1940-45 no Ontario championship was competed for.
1996- The win for Guelph marks their first trip to the provincial final since 1996 when they defeated the Waterloo Warriors to advance to a national bowl game.
3- The number of Yates Cup trophys that Guelph has won. 1996, 1992 and 1984 mark the years in which Guelph were crowned Ontario football champions.
26- The number of Yates Cup trophys that Western has won. The first year the Mustangs won the Ontario football championship was in 1939 and the most recent was in 1998. On eight occasions, Western has won consecutive titles, including a four year span between 1979 and 1982 and a three year span between 1988 and 1990.
5 & 6- The spots on the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) passing leaders list that Guelph quarterback Justin Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) and Laurier quarterback Ian Noble (West Vancouber, BC) occupy, respectively. Dunk has thrown for 1784 yards and 17 touchdowns while Noble has thrown for 1388 yards and 10 touchdowns on the season.
6 & 7- The current rankings of running backs Randy McAuley (London, Ont.) of Western and Nick Fitzgibbon (Puslich, Ont.) of Guelph on the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) rushing leaders list, respectively. McAuley has rushed for 1017 yards to date this season, while Fitzgibbon has rushed for 794 yards.
3- The number representing the number of times these two teams have met in previous years at the Yates Cup. The most recent meeting took place in 1992 when the fourth place Gryphons defeated the third place Mustangs at SkyDome by a score of 45-10. In 1986 Western was victorious by a score 49-21 and in 1984 Guelph beat the Mustangs 31-26.
1948- The last time Guelph hosted an intercollegiate football league championship game when the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) Aggies, who became the Guelph Gryphons on the federation of the University of Guelph in 1964, beat the Queen's Comets 18-9 to claim the 1948 RMC Cup, then emblematic of Canadian intermediate intercollegiate football supremacy.
1- The first time ever that a fifth and sixth place team have competed against one another for the Yates Cup. Since the eight-team (and later six-team) playoff format was adopted for the 2001 season, the OUA has not seen the upsets it has in the past 10 days, to have a fifth and sixth spot team pitted against one another for the provincial football championship.
