WESTERN CLAIMS FINAL PLAYOFF SPOT, WHILE MCMASTER DEFEATS GUELPH IN DYING SECONDS OF PLAY
McMaster fifth year quarterback, Adam Archibald (Kingston,ON) kicked a 48 rouge(single-point) through the University Guelph endzone with 6.8 seconds remaining on the clock to give McMaster a dramatic 37-36 victory over the Gryphons and Alumni stadium in Guelph, Ontario.
With the victory, McMaster gained home field advantage in the Ontario
University Athletics (OUA)quarter-final next weekend, where McMaster will play a rematch against the Gryphons.
Archibald established a new McMaster single game passing yardage record
completing 27 of 41 passes for 527 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. He surpasses Ben Chapdelaine (Montreal, QC) who threw for 460 in the OUA Semi-Finals versus the University of Western
Ontario on November 2, 2001.
In the third quarter, Archibald connected with Mike Bradwell (Toronto, ON) on a 108 yard pass to set the McMaster record for the longest completed pass. The previous record for longest completion was 103 yards was established on a Mark Stubbert to Bob Hultgren pass versus the University of Waterloo on September 30, 1978.
Bradwell, had two touchdowns on the day, to set a third McMaster record
for the most receiving touchdowns in a season with 9 on the year. The previous record of 8 touchdown receptions in a season was shared by
Clorindo Grilli (1984) and Ryan Janzen (2000)
The CIS leading receiver coming into the weekend, Mike Bradwell had 12
receptions for 256 yards and 2 touchdowns in the game. Andrew Ross Burlington, ON) had 6 receptions for 103 yards.
The McMaster defense was active all day recording 5 sacks, 3 interceptions, 2 breakups, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery. James Edwards (Hamilton, ON), playing in the Linebacker position, in place of the injured Simon Binder (Almonte, ON) had 7.5 tackles and 0.5 sacks. Byron Metcalfe (Pickering, ON) had 4 tackles, 2 interceptions, 2 breakups and a forced fumble for the Marauders.
Guelph was led by Justin Dunk (Guelph, ON) , who completed 18 of 32 passes for 201 yards, 1 touchdown, and 3 interceptions. Dunk also rushed 7 times for 70 yards on the game.
Guelph runningback, Nick Fitzgibbon (Puslinch, ON) had 18 carries for
130 yards and 1 touchdown. He also 6 receptions for 65 yards and a second touchdown.
James Savoie (Niagara Falls, ON) had 9.5 tackles for the University of
Guelph to lead all tacklers on the day.
Western 37, Waterloo 3
Randy McAuley passed the 1,000-yard mark and became the all-time Mustangs career touchdown leader as the Western Mustangs rolled over the Waterloo Warrriors 37-3 at University Stadium on Oct. 20.
McAuley scored two rushing touchdowns and another receiving in the win which clinches a post-season berth for the Mustangs.
Western finishes in sixth place in the OUA and will travel to play at Queen's on Oct. 27 in the OUA quarter-finals.
The Mustangs dropped a game to Queen's in the home opener in overtime, desptie dominating play.
On Oct. 20, in their final regular season game, both offences struggled generating offence, competing with the wind in the opening quarter.
Waterloo generated the only points with a field goal at the end of the first quarter to lead 3-0.
In the second quarter, Western got a 20-yard field goal from Derek Schiavone and a safety and a single to score six points. The score was 6-3 for the Mustangs at the half.
Western looked like a different team, more determined in the second half.
McAuley ran the ball in for a major on the first possession of the third quarter, and then Western's defence scored a safety to build a 15-3 lead.
Minutes later, receiver David Clayton scored his third touchdown of the season, a 24-yard reception, on a quick slant route with a great pass from QB Michael Faulds to extend the lead to 22-3. Mike Hegarty was a crucial part of the play with outstanding blocking.
After Waterloo conceded a single, it was a 23-point run for the Mustangs in the second and third quarters.
The wind gave Western great field position throughout the second and third frames and allowed them to build a strong lead.
McAuley scored again with 11:53 remaining in the fourth quarter to elevate the lead to 30-3. The fifth-year back finishes his regular season career second overall in Mustang scoring history and has the all-time touchdown lead passing Andy Fantuz's mark of 41 career touchdowns.
Faulds was 18/31 and threw two touchdowns for 274 yards. He did not throw an interception.
But McAuley was the star, finishing with 37 carries for 186 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground, adding another touchdown on a screen pass and finishing with 41 receiving yards.
Earlier in the season, McAuley set marks as the all-time Mustang career leader in rushing yardage and rushing touchdowns as well as kickoff return yardage.
Queen's 54, Toronto 24
The No. 9 ranked Queen's Golden Gaels gained over 700-yards in offence to blast the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 54-24 to finish the regular season on Saturday in Toronto.
Kingston natives Rob Bagg and Mike Giffin each had three touchdowns as the Gaels concluded their regular season campaign 6-2 good enough for third seed heading into next week's OUA playoffs . Bagg caught nine passes for a total of 341-yards while Giffin earned 130 yards on the ground and another 70 in the air.
Gaels Quarterback Dan Brannagan of Burlington, Ont. had his best offensive showing of the season lighting up the scoreboard for four touchdown scores with 14 completions, 22 attempts and 440-yards passing.
Giffin, last week's OUA Athlete of the Week, is the only running back in Gaels history to run for 100-yards in eight consecutive league games. He has now amassed 10 consecutive 100-yard plus rushing games dating back to last season. He also finishes the regular season with a total of 1,157-yards, the most in team history.
Third year running back Marty Gordon of Kingston also scored his first touchdown of the season to finish the Gaels scoring outburst early in the fourth quarter.
Toronto did manage to put 24 points against the Gaels defence with 17 coming when the game's outcome had been well decided and Queen's resting many of their starters. Kris Newman (Scarborough, Ont.) was the leading back for the Blues earning 22 carries for 126-yards and a single touchdown. The Blues also got touchdowns from Andrew Gillis (Markham, Ont.), and Quarterback David Hamilton (Mississauga, Ont.). Hamilton threw 10 completions for 160-yards in the air.
On the defensive side of the ball Jimmy Allin of Corbyville, Ont. tied a team record for most career pass break-ups recording one in today's game. Allin, a third year defensive back is tied with Kirby Calvert who played for the Gaels until 2005 with 17.
Overall the Gaels defence surrendered 375-yards offence recovering two of Toronto's five fumbles and sacking Hamilton once.
Ottawa 43, Windsor 2
Ottawa fourth-year quarterback Josh Sacobie threw three touchdowns in just over two quarters before sitting out as the Gee-Gees defeated Windsor 43-2 Saturday to cap a perfect 8-0 season and finish undefeated in the regular season for the first time since 1999 when the team played in the Ontario-Quebec Conference.
Gee-Gees kicker Ara Tchobanian also had a field day, connecting on a season-high 50-yarder among three field goals to move within two of the Canadian university record.
The CIS leading scorer with 106 points, Tchobanian had field goals of 16, 43 and a wind-aided 50-yard boot in the 41-point first-half along with two kickoff singles.
The Gee-Gees led 41-2 at the half, setting a season record with 31 unanswered points in the second quarter.
Tchobanian, a fifth-year natve of Nepean, Ont., was set to tie the OUA single season record of 22 field goals set by McMaster's Michael Ray in 2003, but missed right from 26 yards and left from 47 yards in the fourth quarter. The CIS single-season field goal record is 23 by Manitoba's Jamie Boreham in 2003.
Sacobie, uOttawa's all-time leading passer, connected on 15 of 26 passes for 280 yards and found Cyril Adjeity for the first of two scores from 47 yards in the first quarter, and also found Matt Edgeworth from 13 yards for a total of 21 touchdown passes this season to eclipse his own team record for the 126-year-old Gee-Gees. Rookie Bradley Sinopoli replaced Sacobie for six completions on 13 attempts in the second-half. Gee-Gees runningback Justin Hammond had five carries for 115 yards while Paul Lefaive countered with 71 yards on 14 carries.
The 2-6 Lancers, without star runningback Daryl Stephenson for a second straight game with a high ankle sprain, actually led the game (2-0) for a four-minute stretch in the first quarter after Ottawa conceded a safety touch.
Laurier 31, York 10
Two thirty-year-old records fell as the No.5 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (7-1) concluded the regular season with a 31-10 victory over the York Lions (1-7) at York Stadium this past weekend.
Ryan Lynch (Waterloo, Ont.) concluded his fourth year regular season with 81 yards on 18 carries and a three-yard run into the end zone for a touchdown. The three yard run, with 28-seconds on the clock in the second quarter, broke a 30-year Wilfrid Laurier record set back in 1977 by Jim Reid for the most rushing attempts in a season, 163.
Lynch now finishes the regular season with a personal best of 1,029 rushing yards - putting him third in Laurier's all-time books behind Jim Reid's total of 1,078 in 1977 and Justin Praamsma's total of 1,066 in 2000.
Late in the fourth quarter backup running back Mike Montoya (Burlington, Ont.) had the same high praise for the offensive line as he ran 103-yards for the final purple-and-gold touchdown of the game.
The 103-yard run knocks off another 1977 record, this one by Paul Falzon who had the mark set at 100 yards.
Andy Baechler (Ayr, Ont.) caught his first touchdown pass of the year on one of Ian Noble's (West Vancouver, B.C.) seven completions on the windy afternoon. Noble finished the game 7 of 16 for 90 yards and a touchdown. His longest reception went to Jeff Emberley (Oakville, Ont.) for 36 yards.
The remaining Laurier points were acquired by kicker Chris Mamo (London, Ont.) who had two field goals and two singles.
On the defensive side of the ball Anthony Maggiacomo (Cambridge, Ont.), Laurier's season leading tackler picked up five tackles (three solo) and Joe Labenski (Welland, Ont.) led the team with two sacks on York's backup quarterback Brian Fortier.
Fortier completed 13 of 32 for 149 yards including a connection to Adrian Wallace for his first and the only York touchdown of the game. York's Steven Hughes was the top receiver with 10 catches for 147 yards. Hughes picked up a York single-season record as well most receptions with 44.
