GOLDEN HAWKS RYAN LYNCH NAMED CIS OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Lynch, a fourth-year economics student from Waterloo, Ont. tallied 190 rushing yards and one touchdown on 24 carries on Labour Day Monday to lead the No. 7 Golden Hawks to a 36-26 season-opening win over nationally-ranked McMaster. The five-foot-nine, 205-pound back scored on a seven-yard run late in the second quarter to give Laurier a 12-9 halftime lead.
Calgary running back Anthony Woodson was also up for the offensive honour.
Burrows, a third-year commerce student from Edmonton, returned an interception on 32 yards for a touchdown and added three solo tackles as the reigning Canada West champion, No. 2-ranked Huskies dominated Alberta 45-14 in their 2007 debut. The six-foot-two, 193-pound defensive back picked up where he left off last fall, when he was named a second team all-Canadian.
Queen’s linebacker Thaine Carter was also nominated on the defensive side of the ball.
Dixon, a first-year student from Victoria and a former junior standout with the Vancouver Island Raiders, had a dream afternoon on Saturday in his Canada West debut connecting on six of seven field goal attempts to lead the No. 4 Bisons to a 36-13 victory over Regina. Dixon became the ninth player in CIS history and the third Canada West player to kick six field goals in a game, stopping one short of the conference record set by Saskatchewan’s Matt Kellett against Alberta on Nov. 2, 1996.
Windsor kicker Kevin Reider was also considered.
