MUSTANGS BATTLE MARAUDERS ON UNIVERSITY RUSH
Western’s Randy McAuley (London, Ontario) started off his fifth OUA football season with a bang in week one, despite the loss, McAuley finished the game with two touchdowns, leading all rushers with 214 yards on 29 carries. On the defensive side, third year Jason Kosec (Mississauga, Ontario) and first year Vaughn Martin (London, Ontario) were a dominate force as Kosec finished the game with six solo tackles and four assisted, while the rookie finished with four solo and four assisted tackles for the Mustangs.
Saturday’s game marks the first time McMaster will face the Western Ontario Mustangs with Marshall at the helm. Marshall led McMaster to four consecutive Yates Cup championships from 2000-2003 before leaving to coach the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
“For me it's nice to go back to Hamilton where I coached, but first and foremost it’s a football game and my focus is on that,” Marshall said. “It'll be nice to see the people who I know and met in my time in Hamilton, but once the game starts, I'll be focusing only on the football game. It won’t be difficult to do that, we're already really focused on this game.”
Coming off a loss to Queen’s, Western does not want to get into the hole and start the season 0-2, Marshall said.
It has the makings of a must-win game, and Marshall said he knows they’ll have to improve.
“Hopefully we score some more points and finish off in the fourth quarter,” Marshall said. “We have to play with more consistency. There were times (against Queen’s) when we played well and there were times when we didn't - the fourth quarter really stands out in that respect. We were tired but we can’t let that be a factor. To be honest, we didn't look like we did in the first half. Against Mac, we need to play 60 minutes of football.”
Marshall expects McMaster to be a strong team with a predictable offence and versatile defence.
“They'll throw the football. Mac has some very good receivers and a strong quarterback. And I expect they’ll mix it up on defence. We know they have a very strong force unit.”
Week one saw the Marauders fall 36-26 to the Laurier Golden Hawks. Fifth year senior, Adam Archibald (Kingston, Ontario) had a great start to his season, despite the loss, completing 26 of 37 passes for 361 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran for 23 yards. McMaster receivers Mike Bradwell (Toronto, Ontario) had a strong game with two touchdowns of his own on 132 yards.
In week one, Stefan Ptaszek’s Maraduers dressed 12 first year and 12 second year players and demonstrated that their youthful team will still be a dominate force in OUA football. "After watching our young team compete last week against a very good Laurier squad, I am enthusiastic that our team can compete with the best teams in the league" said head coach Stefan Ptaszek.
