MCEVOY APPOINTED INTERIM HEAD FOOTBALL COACH AT YORK
An assistant with the Lions for the past three years, McEvoy will lead the team this fall. At the conclusion of the 2007 season, York will begin a nationwide search for a full-time head coach.
“We want to move the team in a new direction,” said Patricia Murray, Director of Sport & Recreation. “Andy is a proven winner, having previously enjoyed success with the Ottawa Gee-Gees. He will lead our student-athletes through this transition period and help us move toward our goal of winning an OUA (Ontario University Athletics) championship.”
“At the same time, we want to thank Tom for his contribution to the York football program for more than a decade. We wish him well in his future endeavors.”
McEvoy joined the Lions in 2004, serving as the team’s offensive coordinator during his first two years of service. Last fall, he switched roles, becoming defensive coordinator.
McEvoy began his coaching career at the University of Ottawa in 1991. He was named head coach of the Gee-Gees in 2001, leading the team to a 6-2 regular season finish and an appearance in the OUA Yates Cup championship. In 2000, he won a Vanier Cup as Ottawa’s offensive coordinator.
“While I was surprised by the news today, I embrace this new opportunity to lead the Lions this fall,” said McEvoy. “I feel my three years with the program will help make the transition easier. We have a number of key players returning this fall and I look forward to the start of the 2007 season.”
A high school science and physical education teacher, McEvoy earned bachelor’s degrees in both physical education and education from the University of Ottawa. A quarterback with the Gee-Gees from 1985 to 1988, he was named the top junior player in Canada in 1984 when he was a member of the Ottawa Sooners.
