PLAYOFF MATCH-UPS STARTING TO TAKE SHAPE WITH ONE WEEK REMAINING IN REGULAR SEASON
Gee-Gees star quarterback Josh Sacobie (Fredricton, NB) threw for three touchdowns without an interception Saturday in the No. 2 Ottawa Gee-Gees 27-15 road win against previously unbeaten No.4 Laurier to secure home field advantage for the OUA playoffs. Davie Mason rushed for 100 yards for a fourth straight game (23 carries, 114 yards) as the Gee-Gees improved to 7-0 and secured home field advantage for the conference semifinal Nov. 3 and Yates Cup Ontario championship Nov. 10, should the team advance. "Sometimes the beds on the road can be uncomfortable," said Mason. "It's good that we're at home."
Sacobie was 19-of-31 for 232 yards, including touchdown passes of seven and eight yards to slotback Justin Wood-Roy for 12 of the Gee-Gees 20 unanswered second quarter points. uOttawa led 20-6 lead at the half. David Crane had six receptions for 73 yards and one touchdown to finish as the Gee-Gees top receiver. Runningback Ryan Lynch had 17 carries for 132 yards for the 6-1 Golden Hawks.
The Gee-Gees, which improved to 3-3 against Laurier since rejoining the OUA in 2001, defeated the Golden Hawks 32-14 last year at Frank Clair Stadium to claim its first Ontario championship in 30 years.
Queen's 45, Waterloo 0
The Queen's Golden Gaels left nothing to chance dominating the Waterloo Warriors in a lopsided 45-0 victory in front of 10,452 fans at Richardson Stadium during homecoming weekend at Queen's University.
Gaels running back Mike Giffin of Kingston, Ont., broke a slew of team records en route to rushing for 193-yards on the ground and scoring three touchdowns in the one-sided affair. Waterloo was held to just 54 total-yards while Queen's amassed a season high 536 total-yards.
Danny Brannagan of Burlington, Ont., threw for 303-yards and completed 19 passes on 31 attempts, converting four for touchdown and one interception. Giffin was Brannagan's top receiver completing four catches at 68-yards with a single touchdown in the air. Scott Valberg (Kingston, Ont.) made 3 receptions converting two for touchdowns while Rob Bagg (Kingston, Ont.), who returned from a rib injury this week, also earned a touchdown reception.
With his 193-yards Giffin now holds the Gaels single season mark of most 100-yard games with seven, topping the previous mark of six held by Larry Mohr (1983) and Brad Elberg (1992). Giffin has now rushed for nine consecutive 100-plus-yard games dating back to last season.
Giffin also becomes the single season rushing leader in Gaels history breaking the mark of 937-yards set by Elberg in the 1992 season. He becomes the only Gael in its 125 year history to have collected over 1,000-yards rushing in a single season and with one game left to play in the regular season sits at 1,029-yards.
His three-touchdowns put him just one behind Elberg for the most touchdowns by a Gael in a single season. Elberg had 14 in 1992. He also trails teammate Bagg for most all purpose yards in one season trailing him by just 26-yards, a mark he will surely pass next week vs. Toronto. Bagg set the current record of all purpose yards in a single season last season with 1,320.
Western 44, Toronto 1
The Western Mustangs received a two touchdown performance from Randy McAuley (London, Ont.) to hand the Toronto Varsity Blues their 48th straight loss, giving the 0-7 Blues the record for the longest futlity streak in CIS history.
McAuley caught four passes for 70 yards and ran the ball 13 times for 70 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Mustangs, despite sitting out the fourth quarter with the game well in hand.
Derek Schiavone (Port Colborne, Ont.) booted four field goals for Western, while Nick Kordic (Toronto, Ont.) intercepted a David Hamilton pass for an 85-yard defensive touchdown.
Mustangs quarterback Michael Faulds (Eden Mills, Ont.) ran in for a touchdown himself and was 19/29 for 292 yards, utilizing a number of different receivers on the day, including McAuley as a popular target on screen passes.
Hamilton finished 11/25 passing for 166 yards with two interceptions.
McAuley is now just one touchdown away from tying Andy Fantuz's Mustang career touchdown record of 41.
McMaster 40, York 16
The McMaster ground game produced a season high 277 yards to give the Marauders a 40-16 victory over the visiting York Lions at Ivor Wynne Stadium as a part of McMaster's 70th Homecoming celebrations.
McMaster jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter, with McMaster receiver, Kevin D'Hollander (London, Ont.) scoring his first career CIS touchdown, and Caesar and Nemet scoring on runs inside the ten yard line.
York closed the gap in the third quarter to a touchdown, 21-14, before McMaster defensive back, Phillip Mills intercepted a York pass from Michael Hyatt (Montreal, QC) at the 3:20 mark, and ran it back 54 yards to the York 26 yard line. On the next play, McMaster quarterback, Adam Archibald (Kingston, Ont.) threw a strike to Rob Serviss (Waterloo, ON) to squash the Lions comeback efforts.
Phillip Mills would pick off a second York pass, to give him 2 interceptions on the game.
McMaster kicker, Pauolo Faiazza (Hamilton, Ont.) kicked four field goals in the fourth quarter, including two from 40 yards to seal the victory for McMaster.
McMaster quarterback, Adam Archibald completed 8 of 15 passes for 164 yards, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. Kevin D'Hollander led all receivers in the game with 3 receptions for 87 yards.
York, quarterback, Michael Hyatt finished the game with 11 completions in 23 attempts for 154 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Jerome Walker (Brampton, Ont.) had 66 yards receiving on 4 receptions for the Lions. York defender, Aaron Adusei (Woodbridge, Virginia) had a game high 14 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle and 1 fumble recovery for the Lions. Robin Legault (Bolten, Ont.) added 9 tackles and a fumble recovery.
For McMaster, Simon Binder (Almonte, Ont.), had 5.5 tackles with James Edwards (Hamilton, Ont.) adding 5 tackles and a forced fumble. Jason Arakgi (Oakville, Ont.) contributed 5 tackles to maintain his team lead.
Guelph 36, Windsor 10
The Lancer Football team fell to the University of Guelph Gryphons 36-10 in their final home game of the year on Saturday afternoon at University of Windsor Stadium.
The loss moves the Lancers to 2-5 on the season and eliminates them from playoff contention.
On Saturday, Windsor got on the board first, as 5th year senior kicker Kevin Reider connected on a 23 yard field goal to give the Lancers a 3-0 lead.
The Gryphons responded on the next series, as quarterback Justin Dunk connected with receiver Jedd Gardner on a 75 yard pass play for a touchdown to go ahead 7-3.
Guelph would go on to score 12 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 23-3 lead at the break.
In the second half, it was all Guelph as the Gryphons continued to move the ball effectively on offense and built a 36-3 lead.
Lancer DB Matt Bucknor would add a late interception for a touchdown, to make the final score 36-10 in favour of Guelph.
For the Gryphons, quarterback Justin Dunk finished the day 27 of 41 thru the air for 304 yards and two touchdowns.
Lancer quarterback Dan Lumley struggled on the day, as he finished with 10 completions on 20 pass attempts for 92 yards and one interception.
