PLANS COMING TOGETHER FOR THE 2007 DESJARDINS VANIER CUP
Held in the Founders Room at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, the occasion proved to be an impressive launch for the upcoming Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) football championship.
The Desjardins Vanier Cup will be played in conjunction with the CFL’s Grey Cup weekend for the first time in 2007. The Desjardins Vanier Cup game will be played on Friday, November 23rd, 2007 at 7:30 pm. at the Rogers Centre, while the Grey Cup match will kick-off Sunday, November 25th at 6:00 pm.
The Score’s Tim Micallef and Duane Forde were enthusiastic hosts who vocalized what a great opportunity the coupled event would be in terms of providing exposure for the student-athletes in Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
As co-chairs of the 2007 CIS national championships, CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon and CIS and CFL alumni Mike Morreale were part of the panel who expressed their excitement over the two signature events being played in the same weekend.
Joining the panel was CIS Chief Executive Officer Marg McGregor and OUA President, Lorne Adams. “The athletes who qualify this year will have the thrill of a lifetime playing indoors in front of what we hope will be the largest crowd ever,” commented McGregor.
University of Toronto Athletic Director Liz Hoffman, McMaster University Athletic Director Therese Quigley, President of the Toronto Argonauts Keith Pelley, CIS and CFL Alumni Brad Elberg and Glenn McCausland, and Mike Hogan of the Fan 590 are among the eleven advisory board members.
A schedule of events was highlighted yesterday and includes a festival kick-off at City Hall and a Meet the Coaches Press conference on Tuesday, November 20th, the CIS All-Canadian Awards Gala to be held the following night and the CIS Coach of the Year Breakfast on Thursday morning at the host hotel the Fairmont Royal York.
Festivities and promotions to take place throughout the week were also touched upon such as the OUA Bleacher Bash ticket, Tiger Town and the Vanier Cup pre-game Doritos Rush Hour concert featuring Ill Scarlet.
The Score Television Network will broadcast the event nationally and are confident that the record number of viewers of 580,00 plus from last year’s game will be broken this year.
It is clear the road to the Vanier Cup has begun to what is shaping up to be a spectacular football event.
