WESTERN NOW 0-4, WHILE QUEEN'S, LAURIER, and OTTAWA REMAIN 4-0
Randy McAuley (London, Ont.) set the all-time Mustangs career rushing record in the first half, but the Western Mustangs fell to 0-4 for the first time since 1967 and another running back stole the show.
Gryphons running back sophomore Nick Fitzgibbon (Puslinch, Ont.) scored four touchdowns with 132 yards on the ground and another 53 yards receiving to thwart the Mustangs.
McAuley, who was only 12 yards off the career rushing title entering the game, now has 2,959 rushing yards in his Mustang career which began in 2003. Mustang Sean Reade (1992-1996) previously held the record at 2,905 yards in his career. He is still tied with Tim Tindale for the most career rushing touchdowns with 34, but McAuley is only two rushing majors off that mark. McAuley also has 543 career receiving yards and 2 touchdowns on 45 catches.
Western now falls to 0-4 for the first time in 40 years. The last time the Mustangs started the season 0-4 was in 1967 when John Metras coached the team to a disappointing 1-7-1 record, with six straight losses to start their season to Laurier, Waterloo, Toronto, Queen's, McGill and Toronto.
Faulds seemed to have a good rhythm early in the game before he was picked off by Sean Riley (Burlington, Ont.) on his third attempt.
In the fourth quarter, with Western desperate, the Mustangs gambled on a third and three with 5:51 left and starting quarterback Michael Faulds was sacked. It was a microcosm of what happened on the day, with the offensive line failing to give Faulds great protection.
Even still, Faulds showed poise passing for 250 yards. But he was picked off three times, due in large part to the excellent pressure from Guelph's front seven.
Guelph was led by their quarterback, Justin Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) who completed 17 of 28 passes for a total of 159 yards. Receiving these completions was mainly Nick Fitzgibbon (Puslinch, Ont.) who rushed 15 carries for a total of 98 yards and two touchdowns as well as received 75 yards on 8 attempts and another two touchdowns for Guelph.
The Mustangs squad was primarily led by quarterback Michael Faulds, who completed 32 out of 54 passes, for a total of 330 yards.
Queen's 38, Windsor 3
The No. 8 ranked Queen's Golden Gaels extended their unbeaten streak to four as they defeated the Windsor Lancers (1-3) 38-3 in front of a national television audience on Saturday night in Windsor, Ont.
Mike Giffin (Kingston, Ont.) led the Gaels with three rushing touchdowns and 120 yards on the ground keeping the Gaels undefeated in the 2007 campaign. Giffin has now collected six touchdowns in the last two games and has earned four consecutive games with 100 plus rushing yards.
With the game broadcast live on The Score Television Network, Queen's fell behind 1-0 early in the first quarter. They quickly rebounded after Jimmy Allin (Corbyville, Ont.), returned a punt to put the Gaels deep in Windsor territory setting up 19-yard Giffin run.
In the second quarter the Gaels erupted for 21 points which gave the Tricolour a 28-1 lead going into the half. Prior to the half, Allin had intercepted two passes, one of which resulted in a second Giffin touchdown.
Danny Brannagan (Burlington, Ont.) completed 11 of 22 passes for a total of 258-yards with two touchdowns. Brannagan's top play came in the fourth quarter when he hooked up with Kingston's Rob Bagg on a 67-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach at 35-3.
Not to be overshadowed, the Queen's defence held reigning Hec Creighton trophy winner, Windsor running back Daryl Stephenson (London, Ont.) to just 109-yards and no touchdowns. The Lancer passing game was also less non-existent giving up just 97-yards in the air and picking off Lancer Quarterback Dan Lumley (Windsor) three times.
Stephenson was able to collect enough yards on the Gaels defence to pass 4,000 career yards rushing in his career. He became the seventh player in CIS history and only the second in OUA history to break the 4,000-yard barrier. Stephenson is just 59-yards away from breaking the all-time mark which is held by former McMaster Marauder and current CFL Hamilton Tiger Cat Jesse Lumsden (4,138).
Laurier 35, Waterloo 3
Ryan Lynch and Ian Noble handled the offense - and the Golden Hawk defense took care of the rest as the No.5 Wilfrid Laurier (4-0) steamrolled their cross town rivals, No. 10 Waterloo, 35-3 (3-1). Students and alumni alike were out in full force, setting a Laurier Football record with a crowd of 9,347.
The Golden Hawk faithful watched a dominate running game that saw an offensive line led by Andrew Dietrich (Waterloo, Ont.), Tyler Felber (Kitchener, Ont.) and Scott Evans (Cambridge, Ont.) open up huge holes on the ground, leading to 304 rushing yards. Running Back Ryan Lynch (Waterloo, Ont.) accounted for 228 of those yards - 3rd most in a game in Golden Hawk history.
Laurier has now won the "ËœBattle of Waterloo' in each of the past 5 seasons.
The Hawks wasted no time in jumping out to an early 7-0 lead after Dustin Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) returned a Waterloo punt 81 yards into enemy territory. Ryan Lynch did the rest on the very next play - breaking two tackles before hitting the end zone. Peter Quinney (Belleville, Ont.) then capped off a 6 play, 76 yard drive by catching one of three Ian Noble (West Vancouver, B.C.) touchdown passes, putting the Hawks up two scores, 14-0.
The Warrior defense kept them in the game for most of the first half. It wasn't until a critical mistake gave the Hawks the momentum they needed to put the game away for good. With just 46 seconds left in the half, and Warriors punting from their own 7 yard line, instead conceding the safety, Waterloo decided to punt it and turn things over to the defense. 4 plays and 32 seconds later, the Hawks went up 21-0 on a magical scramble out of the pocket by Quarterback Ian Noble.
Waterloo's offense couldn't get anything going against the OUA's No.1 defense. It wasn't until the final three minutes of the fourth quarter that the Warriors even reached the red zone. Linebackers Anthony Maggiacomo (Cambridge, Ont.), Luke Pinder (Kitchener, Ont.) and Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) were in face of Warrior Quarterbacks all day. Rapanaro racked up 3 sacks, while Maggiacomo and Pinder combined for 15 tackles.
Defensive linemen Chima Ihekwoaba (Burlington, Ont.), Joe Labenski (Welland, Ont.) and Paul Hancock (Cochrane, Ont.) pressured all three of the Warriors Quarterbacks - forcing them into 4 interceptions by Taureen Allen (Etobicoke, Ont.), Jim Martyniuk (Burlington, Ont.), Jordan Van Horn (Burlington, Ont.) and Peter Provenzano (Richmond Hill, Ont.). All totaled, the Hawks held the Warriors to only 179 yards of total offense.
Noble added to his great game in the third quarter, throwing two more touchdowns to Dustin Heap and Dante Luciani (Oakville, Ont.). With top receiver Andy Baechler (Ayr, Ont.) out with an ankle injury, Noble spread the ball around, hitting 7 different receivers for 204 yards and three touchdowns.
McMaster 31, Toronto 11
A young McMaster squad, with two-thirds of its dress roster in their first or second year of eligibility, defeated the University of Toronto (0-4) 31-11 at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton.
McMaster (2-2) took a 6-2 lead into the half and scored 25 points in the second half to secure the victory.
Second year Marauder quarterback Ryan Fantham, (London, Ont.) replacing the injured fifth-year senior Adam Archibald(Kingston, Ont.), completed 17 of 30 passes for 295 yards, 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
CIS-leading receiver, Mike Bradwell (Toronto, Ont.) had 4 receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown with Rob Serviss (Waterloo, Ont.) adding 3 receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown for the Marauders.
McMaster rookie running back Clayton Caesar (Hamilton, Ont.) received player of the game honours, rushing 8 times for 73 yards and a touchdown.
McMaster rookie middle linebacker Ryan Chmielewski (St. Catharines, Ont.)
had a monster game with 9 tackles, 2 assisted tackles, 2 sacks and 2 fumble recoveries.
University of Toronto quarterback Andrew Gillis (Markham, Ont.) completed 19 of 36 passes for 168 yards, 1 interception and no touchdowns. Mark Stinson (Calgary, AB) was his favourite target on the day with 8 receptions for 79 yards.
Toronto running back, Kris Newman (Scarborough, Ont.) rushed 17 times for 125 yards and a touchdown.
Ottawa 53, York 14
At Ottawa, sophomore receiver Matt Bolduc (Ottawa, Ont.) caught two of Josh Sacobie's (Fredricton, NB) four touchdown passes as the No. 3 Gee-Gees thumped the York Lions 53-14 to remain undefeated at the midway point of the regular season for the first time since rejoining the OUA in 2001.
Bolduc, who had five receptions for 137 yards, caught a 62-yard score in the first quarter and scored from 32 yards in the third as the Gee-Gees opened a 40-3 lead.
A fourth-year pivot, Sacobie finished with 21 completions off 33 attempts for 374 yards, including 238 yards in the first half after finding Bolduc, David Crane (Ottawa, Ont.) from 16 yards - and Justin Wood-Roy (Morin Heights, QC) from 25 - for a 33-3 halftime advantage.
Crane had eight catches for 104 yards and Davie Mason (Ottawa, Ont.) tallied 118 yards on 21 carries to lead all rushers in the game. Defensive back Lee Shaver returned an interception on 65 yards for a score in the fourth quarter.
The lone highlight for 0-4 York came in the third stanza when slotback Jason Marshall (Innisfil, Ont.) caught a 79-yard TD pass from Michael Hyatt (Montreal, QC).
