QUEEN'S UPSETS NO. 7 MUSTANGS, WHILE No. 8 LAURIER PUSHES PAST No. 9 MCMASTER
It took overtime but the Queen's Golden Gaels spoiled the party as the No. 7 Western Mustangs fell 26-20 in front of a packed and lively crowd at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
Mike Giffin (Kingston, Ont.) ran in a 23-yard carry to win the game, diving into the corner and landing in the purple for the six points and the upset victory. Randy McAuley (London, Ontario) ran for 215 yards and two touchdowns but the Mustangs offence sputtered in the fourth quarter.
Western, capitalizing late in the first quarter on some costly Queen's penalties, opened the scoring on a 34-yard field goal with 1:57 remaining in the opening frame to give Western a 3-0 lead.
In the second quarter, after McAuley exploded for a 74-yard run, dipping and dodging a number of Gaels linemen, Western's red-zone offence pushed the ball through and McAuley bounced his way into the end zone behind lineman Scott Nason (West Vancouver, British Columbia) for the first touchdown of the game early in the second quarter. Western's red-zone offence was 3-4 while Queen's went a perfect 3-3 on the night.
With the score 20-6 and Queen's pressuring with 20 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Rob Bagg (Kingston, Ontario) dropped a sure touchdown pass from Dan Brannagan (Burlington, Ontario). But Scott Stinson (North Bay, Ontario) made amends on the next play, pulling in a Brannagan lob pass, as he sailed in wide open in the end zone, making the score 20-13 for Western entering the fourth quarter.
The Gaels continued to test the Mustangs. After another strong Bagg punt return, Dan Village (Vancouver, British Columbia) missed a 38-yard field goal and Western preserved its seven-point lead.
But the Gaels kept pressing, with Marty Gordon (Kingston, Ont.) burrowing in for a one-yard scoring strike to tie the game at 20 with 7:31 remaining.
Both teams had opportunities down the stretch, and Western had a glorious chance to win on the final play of the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the proud Mustangs fans, the normally reliable Schiavone (Port Colborne, Ontario) missed two field goals down the stretch. The first was a 42-yard field goal attempt with no time left on the clock in regulation time - perhaps he was thrown off after Queen's called two timeouts to try to ice the kicker.
In the first overtime, Schiavone missed again from 34 yards out when his kick was blocked by Queen's. In fact, the Gaels nearly won on this play as Jimmy Allin (Corbyville, Ontario) returned the missed kick deep into Mustang territory before the unexpectedly gifted tackling (and backup quarterback) Mark Howard (London, Ontario) made the game-saving tackle to give the Mustangs a final shot.
But then, on the Queen's possession in OT, Giffin ran for a first down for the first Queen's possession of the overtime and then finally dove in on a 23-yard strike to give the Gaels the victory.

At the 2:00 minute mark, with the Laurier Golden Hawks facing second down and long, deep in their territory, Laurier quarterback Ian Noble (West Vancouver, Ontario) executed a perfectly timed bootleg to gain a first down, and squash the Marauder's momentum. Michael Montoya would score a touchdown with 1 minute and 10 seconds remaining in the game to give Laurier a 10 point margin of victory, 36-26.
