LAURIER HANDS QUEEN'S THEIR FIRST DEFEAT, WHILE TORONTO LOSES NAIL BITER TO YORK
The No.4 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks scored 23 unanswered points to take the No.7 Queen's Golden Gaels 23-4 in front of 5,582 fans at Richardson Stadium in Kingston this past Saturday.
The Hawks held the Gaels to only a single and a field goal, the first time this season they did not scoring a major. Defensive back Jahmeeks Beckford (Kitchener, Ont.) contributed with two interceptions off of Danny Brannagan and the Gael offence assisted with two fumbles of their own.
After a slow first quarter which saw a combined three first downs, the Hawks exploded with 17 points in the second quarter.
Quarterback Ian Noble (West Vancouver, B.C.) completed 20 of 31 passes for 200 yards and a major, dropping below his 77% completion average for the first time this season.
Noble rushed for seventeen yards in the game including a one-yard carry after receiver Andy Baechler (Ayr, Ont.) made a 38-yard catch in his return to the line-up. The 5'9 receiver was out of the roster last weekend as a result of an ankle injury in the game against Toronto.
The nation's leading rusher Ryan Lynch (Waterloo, Ont.) was held to 78 yards over 20 carries for the first time this season as the Gael defence had counted on the run being a significant part of the purple-and-gold offence.
Queens' Mike Giffin caused some trouble for the Golden Hawk defense as he carried the ball 25 times for 165 yards. The remainder of the offense was in the air as Brannagan completed 10 of 30 for 159 yards.
Hickey contributed with 3.5 tackles in the game while linebacker Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) led the team with 4.5. Defensive end Paul Hancock (Cochrane, Alta.) had the only sack of the game while also forcing a fumble. Laurier leading tackler Anthony Maggiacomo (Cambridge, Ont.) made four tackles (three solo) on the performance as well.
York 21, Toronto 20
The York Lions have put the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on the brink of history.
The Blues' losing streak was extended to 46 games - just one shy of York's national record of 47 (1988-1995) - after the Lions (1-4) came from behind to beat Toronto 21-20 in the 38th annual Red and Blue Bowl Saturday (Sept. 29) at York Stadium.
Lions rookie kicker Stephen Grochot's 36-yard field goal with 40 seconds left put York up 21-20. On the final play of the game, Blues kicker Joe Valtellini's 49-yard field goal came up short, ending a wild contest and giving the Argo Cup to the Lions.
The Blues (0-5) could tie the national losing streak record Friday (Oct. 5) when they play host to the Windsor Lancers. The record-breaker would be Oct. 13 on the road against the Western Mustangs.
Trailing 17-10 early in the fourth quarter after Derek Batchelor blocked a punt and scored a touchdown for U of T, York responded with a single and their own blocked punt by Jared Corbin, putting the ball at the Blues one-yard line. Donovan Service punched it in to put York ahead 18-17.
The Blues regained the lead on a 20-yard Valtellini field goal with just over six minutes left, but Jerome Walker's 49-yard punt return put the Lions in good field position and set the stage for Grochot's heroics.
York interim head coach Andy McEvoy recorded his first win with the Lions. The victory also snapped a seven-game losing streak for York.
Western 49, Windsor 0
The Western Mustangs won their first game of the season to keep their playoff hopes alive, appropriately winning at Homecoming 49-0 in front of 11,787 at TD Waterhouse Stadium this past weekend.
Randy McAuley (London, Ont.) scored three touchdowns, including two on the ground. He also tied the Mustangs all-time career rushing TD mark (34 with Sean Reade and Tim Tindale) and beat the all-time Mustangs career kickoff return yardage mark, passing the previous record held by Rob Campbell (688 yards) in a convincing performance.
Western exploded early and never looked back, as Greg Marshall won his first game as the Mustangs' head coach.
McAuley finished with 23 carries for 204 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and had seven catches for 64 yards and 1 touchdown receiving.
The lone bright spot on the day for Windsor was when Daryl Stephenson (London, Ont.) broke the OUA's all-time rushing record on the last rush of the third quarter. The fourth-year running back finished the day with 25 carries for 99 yards, also breaking the OUA record for most carries in a career. He now has 4,178 yards in his career to lead the OUA and sits third all-time in CIS history. Dominic Zagari of Manitoba, who played 37 games from 1991-95, has the CIS career rushing record with 4,738 yards.
Western's defence was lethal and everything was clicking for the Mustangs. Derek Schiavone (Port Colborne, Ont.) capped off an impressive four-minute, full-field drive with a 13-yard field goal to give Western the early 3-0 lead.
After the defence helped the Mustang offence to great field position to start the next drive, McAuley was a big factor in an impressive drive, which the fifth-year back capped off with a seven-yard touchdown catch to spread the lead to 10-0.
In the second quarter, after forcing a safety, Western marched back into Windsor territory with McAuley and a balanced passing attack leading the way. Then quarterback Michael Faulds (Eden Mills, Ont.) kept the ball and slid in for the major to give the Mustangs the 19-0 lead.
Windsor conceded another safety before McAuley ran in the ball for his second TD of the game to make it 28-0, then David Clayton caught a 10-yard Faulds pass to make it 35-0 at the half.
McAuley added another major on the ground in the third quarter to tie the Mustangs career rushing TD record at 34 rushing TDs, spreading the lead to 42-0.
Faulds finished with a great game, 25/30 for 314 yards and 2 TDs. Windsor QB Jorel Petree of Utica, MI, was just 2/7 for 26 yards.
Guelph 41, Waterloo 8
The Guelph Gryphons football team (3-2) downed the Warriors by a score of 41 - 8 at University Stadium in Waterloo this past Saturday afternoon.
Gryphon's quarterback Justin Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) was sensational, going 13 for 22 and 313 yards. Each completed pass by Dunk was good for a first down as the Gryphons were effective and efficient on the offensive side of the ball.
Guelph wasted little time, scoring just 2:04 into the game with running back Nick Fitzgibbon (Guelph, Ont.) capping off a opening drive with a 2 yard run for the score. Fitzgibbon had 19 touches on the day good for 140 yards. After a 48 yard punt by Warriors kicker David Sevigny to earn the single point, Fitzgibbon would once again prove to be too much for the Warriors defense with a 25 yard run to set up a 7 yard pass by Dunk to Fitzgibbon to put the Gryphons up 14-1. Guelph would add a field goal with no time left on the clock to end the first quarter at 17-1.
In the second quarter Justin Dunk would strike once again hooking up with wide receiver, Dave Harrison to put the Gryphons up 27-1. Harrison had 7 catches on the day for 150 yards.
The fourth quarter saw the Gryphons put the final dagger into the Warriors as Dunk would hook up with receiver Lorne Foster for a 102 yard TD pass to put Guelph up 34-8. Justin Dunk completed with a 12 yard TD run late in the fourth quarter to drown the Warriors 41-8 and hand them their second straight loss.
