WESTERN FALLS TO 0-3 WHILE WATERLOO SHOCKS WINDSOR AT HOME
Mike Giffin (Kingston, Ont.) had three touchdowns leading the No. 10 ranked Queen's Golden Gaels (3-0) to a 24-20 come-from-behind victory over the No. 9 McMaster Marauders (1-2), Saturday at Richardson Stadium.
Early in the fourth quarter, with the Gaels trailing McMaster 20-9, Queen's drove down the field and Giffin ended the drive on third and goal from the one-yard line to make the score 20-16. With 8:19 left in the fourth, Gaels Quarterback Dan Brannagan (Burlington, Ont.), connected with Giffin on a nifty nine-yard pass to put the Gaels up for good 23-20.
McMaster conceded a single point with 4:50 left in the game to make the score 24-20. Queen's linebacker Paul Boshyk (Etobicoke, Ont.) sealed the Gaels victory with under a minute left in the game by intercepting McMaster quarterback Adam Archibald (Kingston, Ont.).
Queen's first touchdown was a 74-yard screen pass by Brannagan to Giffin which put Queen's up 9-0. McMaster then rallied for 20 points with Archibald connecting for two consecutive touchdown passes. Archibald hit running back Ugonna Ihekwoaba (Burlington, Ont.) for a 31-yard pass and then completed an eight-yard pass to Rob Serviss (Waterloo, ON) for his second touchdown of the game.
Archibald was 23 for 42 for a total of 228 yards passing and two touchdowns. Queen's quarterback Brannagan was 17 for 29 and 273 yards while Robb Bagg (Kingston, Ont.) was Queen's top receiver with 8 receptions and 89 yards. McMaster's running game countered for a total of 112 yards with Ihekwoaba leading the Marauders with 47 yards.
Windsor 26, Waterloo 23
The Windsor Lancer football team (1-2) lost a shocker this past Saturday night to the Waterloo Warriors (3-0) as the Warriors defeated the Lancers 26-23 in a come from behind road victory.
The Lancers held a commanding 23-0 first half lead before giving up 26 points in the second half to Waterloo to lose 26-23. Windsor got out to a quick 13-0 lead following two interceptions and a fumble recovery to open the game against Waterloo.
The Lancers would add another touchdown and field goal in the second quarter to take a 23-0 first half lead.
To start the second half the Warriors went to their bench and brought in back up quarterback Luke Balch (London, Ont.). The move would pay off 4:07 into the third quarter as Balch launched a 40-yard pass to running back Will Oud (Tillsonburg, Ont.) for a major and Waterloo's first score of the game. Fourth year kicker Ian Nichol connected on a 40-yard field goal and Windsor conceded a two-point safety to bring the score to 23-12 going into the final quarter.
Balch went back to work in the fourth quarter and connected with Sean Cowie (Burlington, Ont.) for a 29 yard score and brought the Warriors within 4. With 24 seconds left on the clock Balch completed the comeback and connected with defensive end Adam Kania (Burlington, Ont.), who was forced into offensive action, on a 9-yard touchdown pass; completing the comeback and securing the Warriors third win of the season.
Balch finished the day going 14 - 21 for 229 yards, 3 touchdown passes and zero interceptions; he also had seven carries for 41 yards rushing. Sean Cowie had another big day receiving with eight catches for 129 yards and one touchdown catch. Cowie has a touchdown catch in his last four games with the Warriors dating back to the final game of last season.
Linebacker Steve Campbell (Kingston, Ont.) led the Warrior defense with 5.5 tackles against the Lancers. The Warriors held the Lancers to a total of 14 first downs and zero second half points. Andrew Heeley (Carlisle, Ont.) recorded Waterloo's lone sack of the game.
For the Lancers, quarterback Jorel Petree (Utica, Michigan) connected on nine of 20 passes for 118 yards and one touchdown. Lancer receiver Glenn MacKay (Ancaster, Ont.) caught 5 passes for 96 yards and one touchdown.
Ottawa 35, Western 30
Frank Spera, an Ottawa junior offensive lineman scored the improbable game-winning touchdown, landing on a loose ball in the endzone after an Ara Tchobanian (Ottawa, Ont.) field goal miss to lift the No.3 Ottawa Gee-Gees (3-0) to a 35-30 win over the Western Mustangs (0-3) at TD Waterhouse Stadium this past weekend.
Spera, a 340-pound lineman from Montreal, fell on the ball and silenced the Mustangs crowd that had just witnessed Western come back from a 19-0 deficit to lead 24-18.
Rookie Jeremy Hipperson's (St. Catharines, Ont.) fumble on the game's opening kickoff pinned the Mustangs deep early, as Ottawa's defence forced a two and out and the Mustangs conceded a safety.
After a Tchobanian 16-yard field goal, Gee-Gees quarterback Joshua Sacobie connected on an 18-yard scoring play with Matthew Bolduc (Ottawa, Ont.) to open up a 12-point lead.
Gee-Gees running back Justin Hammond (Waterdown, Ont.) pounded in the ball to make it 19-0 late in the opening quarter, before Londoner Randy McAuley (London, Ont.) replied to put Western on the scoreboard and make it 19-7.
Then Greg Marshall gambled on a third and 13 late in the opening quarter and it paid off. Faulds, who entered the week second in the nation in passing yards, connected with David Clayton on a 41-yard scoring play to make it 19-14 to close out the half with just 10 seconds left.
But the Mustangs fought and clawed back from a 19-0 lead to pull within five points at the half.
Derek Schiavone's (Port Colborne, Ont.) 31-yard field goal in the third quarter brought Western within two points, 19-17.
And then McAuley scored on a five-yard dash with just over five minutes left in the third quarter to give Western the 24-19 lead to cap off an impressive six-play, 63-yard drive and bring the crowd to life.
A Tchobanian 38-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter brought the Gee-Gees within two points with Western leading 24-22.
But then Spera fell on the ball on Watson's fumble to seal the victory.
Western scored a 14-yard touchdown as Josh Starr (Tecumseh, Ont.) pulled in a catch with one second left but it wasn't enough as Western lost 35-30, as Mark Howard (London, Ont.) dropped a Faulds pass on the two-point conversion attempt.
Laurier 53, Toronto 10
Ryan Lynch (Waterloo, Ont.) scored three touchdowns in the first quarter of play as the No.6 nationally ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-0) defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (0-3) 53-10 at a homecoming game at Varsity Stadium.
Within the first 15-minutes of the game, the running back from Waterloo carried the ball seven times for 73-yards and three of the four Golden Hawk majors. The remaining touchdown in the quarter came as Wilfrid Laurier's second from a defensive play this season with defensive back Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, ON.) picking up a fumble and returning it 22-yards.
Quarterback Ian Noble (West Vancouver, ON) completed four of four passes for 56-yards before taking a seat on the bench with Lynch for the second half of the game.
The game - primarily on the ground as a result of a downpour resulted in 446 of a total of 536 yards of the Golden Hawk offense on the ground.
Upon Noble's relief, Ben Wilsack (Beamsville, Ont.) saw the third quarter of play completing a pass for five yards while rookie Luke Thompson (London, Ont.) finished the game completing two of four for 28-yards and rushing for 76-yards including a 49-yard carry.
Steve Turner (Oakville, Ont.) relieved Lynch in the backfield finishing with a team high 144-yards over 12 carries and two touchdowns. The performance was his best in the three years he has seen the field with the program as he typically is a member of the punt and kickoff returns.
Toronto scored their only major of the game on a 97-yard kickoff return by Matt D'Sousa at the start of the third quarter. Earlier George Poluzois kicked a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter to make the score 28-3.
Kicker Chris Mamo (London, Ont.) nailed three of his four field goal attempts missing only a 28-yarder to the right while hitting between the pipes on 27, 26 and 13.
On top of Rapanaro's touchdown, he led the team in tackles with 7.5 (seven solo) with team-leading linebacker Anthony Maggiacomo (Cambridge, Ont.) just behind him adding 5.5 to his total (five solo).
Both Taurean Allen (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Brent Hickey (Burlington, Ont.) picked up interceptions off of Toronto quarterback Andrew Gillis. Gillis completed 4 of 20 for 37 yards before taking a seat to two other quarterbacks in the second half.
Guelph 47, York 7
The York Lions' (0-3) home opener turned sour in a hurry as the Guelph Gryphons (1-2) scored a touchdown on the first play before rolling to a 47-7 victory this past Saturday at York Stadium.
Paul Bartley recovered Kingsley Kyei's (North York, Ont.) fumble and made his way to the end zone on the game's first play, giving Guelph (1-2) a lead it would not relinquish against York (0-3).
A week after losing 18-15 against the Waterloo Warriors in a tight game, the Lions turned the ball over 11 times and committed 17 penalties. Gryphons quarterback Justin Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) threw for three touchdowns against the shaky York defence, finding David Harrison for two of the majors. The Gryphons had 342 yards of net offence, while York had just 146.
Lions quarterback Michael Hyatt (Montreal, QC), making his first career start at the position, threw four interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown by Sebastien Howard. Steven Hughes (Ottawa, Ont.) led York in receiving yards (47) for the fourth time in the past five games.
The lone scoring play for York came in the third quarter when Kyei raced 42 yards for a touchdown after recovering a fumble.
