CATAMOUNTS DEFEAT GOLDEN HAWKS IN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Earlier in the week the Catamounts defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 71-43 and the Carleton Ravens 82-60. Vermont only brought their senior players on the road trip as NCAA rules prevent freshmen from playing this early in the season. Laurier was also down a player with reigning OUA defensive MVP Renata Adamczyk (Greensville, Ont.) out with an injury.
Vermont opened the scoring in the first quarter and never looked back earning an early six-point lead off a three-pointer by Courtney Pilypaitis (Ottawa, Ont.). The Catamounts shut down the Laurier shooters at every turn allowing them to build a 20-point lead with three minutes left to play. The Hawks freshman Alena Luciani (Oakville, Ont.) would cut into the visitors lead with a couple of baskets. By the end of the first, Vermont held a commanding 17-point lead.
The second period had the Catamounts continue their stellar shooting, led by Kotsopoulos who had 23 first half points. With two minutes remaining in the half Vermont held a 45-point led over the Hawks, but Laurier continued to persevere and finished the quarter by draining three straight baskets. At the break the visitors led 60-22.
Vermont had their highest scoring quarter in the third, netting 33 points while holding the purple and gold to just eight. The Catamounts spread their scoring around in the quarter, but scored eight straight baskets to build a 63 point lead by the end of the frame.
The Hawks continued to pressure the visitors in the fourth quarter and started to put up some points. Vermont scored 18 in the final frame with Laurier scoring 14.
The Golden Hawks top scorer was Luciani with nine points, followed by Megan Grant (Thunder Bay, Ont.) with eight and Aleksa Brkic (Mississauga, Ont.) and Christa Mancino (Port Colborne) with six. Both Grant and Mancino led the home team with six rebounds each.
For the Catamounts, Kotsopoulos netted 37 points, going 15-23. She was followed by Kelly Hier (Winnooski, Vt.) who scored 24 points and Courtney Pilypaitis who had 15. Pilypaitis also led the team with 14 assists and eight rebounds. Alissa Sheftic (Essex Junction, Vt.) also pulled in eight boards.
Next up for the Laurier Golden Hawks is more pre-season action against Fanshawe College on Wed., Sept. 30.
