HOOPS FOR HOPE TO RAISE MONEY FOR MS RESEARCH
Running annually since 2007 in Halifax, this is the first year that the non-profit fundraising event has also taken place in Thunder Bay. Last year's event raised over $3,000.
Kreiner is happy to see Hoops for Hope spread to Thunder Bay.
"I am extremely excited to have a basketball event of this size and magnitude here in Thunder Bay in the summer," Kreiner said. "The players, parents and fans of north-western Ontario are in for a treat. Our parents and this community have worked hard together and this tournament will be an event that all 100 participants will remember for a lifetime."
Nine teams will compete during the weekend of play in two divisions (U-17 and U-15). Action tips off Friday at 9:30 with the opening ceremonies set for 12:00 noon that day.
Former Thunderwolves assistant coach and Halifax Thunder Selects founder Brandon Rafuse will be the featured speaker at the opening ceremonies and will be joined by athletics director Tom Warden and representatives from the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Rafuse was diagnosed with MS while coaching the Thunderwolves.
"Brandon is a great friend and since he was told he had MS while coaching here at Lakehead we have been dreaming of the day that we could put this all together," Kreiner explained. "This is a tremendous cause that I am honoured to be a part of."
