OTTAWA 74, YORK 60
Fifth-year post Katie Laurie (Ottawa, Ont.) scored a double-double Saturday with a season-high 23 points along with 10 rebounds as the Ottawa Gee-Gees women's basketball team defeated the York Lions 74-60 to keep first-place in sight atop the OUA East Division.
Second-place Ottawa improved to 12-6 after taking advantage of two first-year Lions posts to establish a strong presence in the paint.
Laurie's season-best game - on her 23rd birthday - was proof.
\"We definitely wanted to take advantage of the mismatches,\" said Laurie.
The Gee-Gees other second-year posts, Courtney Berquist (Ottawa, Ont.) and Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto, Ont.) - Paisley limped off with an ankle injury in the third quarter - were co-leaders with six first half points but the pesky Lions closed a seven-point deficit after the first quarter to end the half tied 30-30.
\"(The players) probably didn't think I was very happy at the half, and that's a fair assessment,\" said Gee-Gees first-year head coach Andy Sparks. \"I think we responded well in the second half.
Third-year Ottawa guard Melina Wishart (Ottawa, Ont.) hit three of four three-point baskets.
\"It's nice to get a few after missing so many the last few games,\" said Wishart.
The Gee-Gees, on a two-game win streak, hit three straight three-point baskets to end the third quarter, out-scoring the Lions 18-12 for a 48-42 advantage heading to the fourth.
Laura MacCallum (Paris, Ont.) scored 28 points in a losing effort, becoming the Lions all-time leading scorer with 1,377 points.
