CIS SCHOOLS RAISE OVER $90,000 TO FIGHT BREAST CANCER
The impressive amount was unveiled at halftime of the 2009 CIS championship final at the University of Regina.
Jeff Speedy, project manager for the Shoot For The Cure initiative and head coach at the University of New Brunswick, presented a cheque to Mrs. Pam Klein, founder of the Regina-based "Power of Pink" organization, who was representing the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
An additional $11,000 was amassed by schools that elected to donate their fundraised money to local cancer organizations.
This marked the second edition of the Shoot For The Cure initiative, launched in 2007-08 to raise awareness and money to fight the deadly disease. CIS women's basketball programs had collected $50,320.87 a year ago.
This season, 40 CIS schools participated by holding one or numerous fundraising games or activities over the course of the campaign.
Among the most successful activities, four Simon Fraser players shaved their heads at centre court following a game and raised $18,926. Cape Breton amassed $11,282.14 during a very moving night that had a Survivor March at halftime.
The organizing committee of the 2009 CIS championship also got involved and collected additional money this weekend.
CIS head coaches and all-Canadians served as instructors for a player clinic for high school girls that raised approximately $1,200. The host committee also organized events at halftime of Friday's last quarterfinal and Sunday's bronze-medal game.
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation set up a booth at the tournament to help raise awareness for the cause.
