OUA W-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: GOLDEN HAWKS UPSET NO. 10 MUSTANGS
"Our defensive intensive and our rebounding were key," commended head coach Paul Falco after the game. "We took them away from their game and denied them the easy looks that they had the first time we played them."
The Golden Hawks jumped out to an early six-point lead in the first minute of the game and maintained that lead throughout the first half. At the end of the first quarter Laurier held a five-point lead and extended that in the second to 11 points on two straight baskets just before the break.
The Mustangs roared back in the third quarter, outscoring the home team 21-16, but the Golden Hawks still held the lead going into the final frame. Laurier played a strong defensive system that stopped Western cold on several occasions and allowed the purple and gold to score some quick three pointers to extend the lead. Although the Hawks didn't score a basket in the final four minutes of the game, they were good on 81 percent of their free throws to keep the Mustangs in check.
Adamczyk (pictured) led the Lady Hawks with 20 points in the match before fouling out with one minute remaining. Aleksa Brkic (Mississauga, Ont.) scored 17 for the team, while Amber Hillis (Hamilton, Ont.) scored 11. Laurier's top rebounder was Laura Pacevicius (Acton, Ont.) with eight.
For the Mustangs, Bess Lennox (Ottawa, Ont.) scored a game-high 21 points and led the team in rebounding with six. Amanda Anderson (Chatham, Ont.) put down 14 and Megan Lapointe (Burlington, Ont.) scored 10.

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Windsor Lancers women's basketball team continued to roll on the weekend as they dominated the Brock Badgers 75-54 on the road in St. Catharines.
With the victory, the No. 2-ranked Lancers move to 15-1 on the season and sit in first place in the OUA West Division. They hold a four-game lead over the second place Western Mustangs.
Midway through the first quarter Brock led 12-9, before Dranadia Roc (Montreal, Que.) hit a huge three and Windsor went on a 14-0 run over a four-minute span leading 23-12 after 10 minutes.
The Lancers would continue to dominate the floor throughout the second quarter and led 42-24 at the break.
In the second half, Windsor would extend their lead to 31 points 65-34, with just under two minutes left in the third quarter, and cruised to the 75-54 victory.
In the win, Roc led all scorers with 15 points while Raelyn Prince (Harrow, Ont.) added 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting and five rebounds. Alisa Wulff (Pickering, Ont.) also chipped in with 11 points and an incredible 17 rebounds.

TORONTO 74, YORK 67
TORONTO, Ont. - In a well fought battle between cross-town rivals, the Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team came out on top, defeating the York Lions 74-67 on Saturday at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Nicki Schutz (Toronto, Ont.) continued to have the hot hand, knocking down 23 points, hauling in 17 rebounds, making three blocks and forcing three steals.
With the win, the Varsity Blues (11-5) remain in first place in the OUA East Division, have now won nine of the last 10 games and are still undefeated at home in 2009.
Despite a slow start for both teams through the first two quarters, Varsity Blues found themselves up by three points at the end of the first half, helped in large part to the Lions' 1-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc and 0-of-4 shooting from the free-throw line.
The Blues came out very aggressive in the third quarter and went on a 6-0 run in the first minute and half, building a 10-point cushion in the early stages.
At the midway point of the third, fourth-year guard Alaine Hutton (Hamilton, Ont.) fed a beautiful bounce pass to Schutz on a fast break and then nailed three of her 14 second-half points to extend the Blues lead to 44-29.
With the Blues up 19, the Lions found themselves in a huge hole but weren't ready to give up. Led by their gritty all-star Laura McCallum's (Paris, Ont.) game-high 24 points, York's smothering full-court press led to Toronto turnovers and an 8-2 run to close the gap ever-so-slightly.
Hutton would again push the Blues early in the fourth, stealing an errant pass, scoring four quick points and grabbing two rebounds. However, York (3-13) kept pressing and got to within five, 65-60, with just over three minutes remaining.
Blues forward Tara Kinnear (Keptville, Ont.) had a huge final two minutes of action, nailing three big buckets, including a nice pick-and-role with Hutton and a put back with 40 seconds left to help seal a critical 74-67 win.
Schutz had a team-high 23 points and 17 boards, Hutton added 18 points and four steals, while Kinnear dropped 16 and grabbed seven rebounds.
York's McCallum led all scorers with 24 points and had three steals, while Emily Perras (Lindsay, Ont.) and Tara Minicuci (Richmond Hill, Ont.) had 16 and 14 points, respectively.

QUEEN'S 53, CARLETON 52
KINGSTON, Ont. – The Queen's Gaels women's basketball edged the Carleton Ravens 53-52 on a last second lay-up by Brittany Moore (Hannon, Ont.) Moore's basket was part of a bizarre sequence of events in the closing seconds.
With the Gaels down 52-51 and six seconds to play, Moore was fouled on a three-point shot by Carleton's Courtney Smith (Ottawa, Ont.). The referees awarded three free-throw attempts to Moore and a chance to take the lead. On her first attempt she missed, but sunk her second attempt, setting up the unusual ending.
With Moore readying for her third attempt, Carleton's head coach Taffe Charles miscounted how many shots had been taken and failed to send his squad back to guard for a rebound.
Moore missed her final free-throw, but easily scored her own rebound on an undefended lay-up. She was the only player within 10 feet of the basket.
"It was totally my mistake," said Charles after the game. "We didn't have any timeouts left so I thought I'd get a timeout in without actually have a timeout. I lost count of how many shots were being taken. When I realized the third shot was being taken, I was like ‘oh we are in trouble.'"
"I just totally blanked out and no one was there to rebound," added Charles.
Moore was surprised to find no Carleton (10-5) defenders there to rebound, but added that she was lucky to get such an easy shot for the win.
"It was a perfect miss because I didn't have to run anywhere for it. That was a ridiculous ending, I'm shocked."
Moore, the OUA scoring leader, finished as the game's top point producer with 21. Alaina Porter (Burlington, Ont.) also tallied 10 points in the Gaels win. Carleton's top scorer was Ashleigh Cleary (Kemptville, Ont.) who poured in 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Queen's took a 24-18 lead into the half, but by the end of the third quarter that lead had wilted away to 35-32. In the final frame, Carleton outscored the Gaels 20-18, but Moore's bizarre three point play earned Queen's the win.
The Gaels (7-9) are in fourth place in the OUA East Division with 14 points tied with Laurentian.
