TROY TRANSFER TO JOIN WESTERN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM
"This is great news for our program. To welcome in a player of Jacklyn's calibre has us very excited," said Barrie. "I've known Jacklyn for the greater part of her high school career and was always impressed with her on the court as well as how she conducted herself off the court. As a player she is a constant triple threat, being a superb passer, shooter and ball-handler. She is a stellar student in the classroom and has strong character."
"I am super excited to become a part of the Western community. London has a lot to offer, and the people have been very welcoming," said Selfe, a native of Burlington, Ont. "I chose Western academically because of its highly recognized business program. Basketball wise, Western competes at a national level and the ultimate goal would be to walk away with a national championship."
Selfe has a long list of accolades on top of being chosen for Canada Basketball's NEDA program in Grade 12, including being named to the academic all-conference team at Troy and winning two gold medals with the Ontario provincial team (2005, 2007).
Prior to NEDA, Selfe played high school basketball for coach Mike Johnston at Notre Dame where she was the MVP of two Halton Region championship teams.
"I am expecting success in the classroom and on the court. Western will be my new home away from home."
Barrie said he is excited about Selfe's arrival.
"This year will be a transition year for Jack," Barrie said. "It will give her a chance to get accustomed to the school and her academic program as well as how we do things in our program. It will also give her an opportunity to get healthy."
Selfe, who did not finish her season at Troy due to injury, would eligible to play in January.
"We will make the decision on whether she plays the last portion of the season based on her health and her long-term academic plans."
Selfe recently had surgery for compartment syndrome and she is currently working in rehabilitation to return to the court.
"The most important thing for Jack is to get her legs healthy, and the Fowler Kennedy Clinic is one of the top clinics in the country," Barrie said. "The staff at Fowler Kennedy have already been tremendous in dealing with her."
Selfe, 5-foot-11, saw minutes as a freshman at Troy in Alabama, averaging 2.5 points in 11 minutes of action per contest. She will have four years of eligibility remaining.
Barrie said, "She will certainly have an immediate impact in our program."
