LANCERS WIN FIRST-EVER OUA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL BANNER
The OUA Women's Basketball Championship was presented by Investors Group.
Facing the only team to beat them this season, the Lancers (24-1) dominated the game from the outset as they employed a swarming defence and balanced offensive attack.
With the victory, the Lancers now move onto the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Women's Basketball Championship tournament on a 21-game winning streak.
Windsor came out in the first quarter on fire, led by standout forward Alisa Wulff (Pickering, Ont.). The fourth-year senior started the game 3-of-3 from the field and scored seven of the team's first 11 points as Windsor staked an 11-2 lead early on.
At the other end of the floor, the Lancers defence refused to allow any clean looks for Ottawa. Only centre Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto, Ont.) managed to get anything close to a clean look for the Gee-Gees as she scored her team's first six points.
Windsor continued their defensive pressure in the second quarter, forcing the Gee-Gees into three shot-clock violations and limiting them to just six points. On offence, Windsor spread the ball around as they got three-point buckets from Dranadia Roc (Montreal, Que.), Marissa Bozzetto (Windsor, Ont.) and Emily Abbott (Calgary, Alta.) to give the Lancers a 42-14 lead at the half.
Despite the deficit, the Gee-Gees came out to start the third quarter determined to get back into the game. Led by the outside shooting of Emilie Morasse (Quebec City, Que.), Ottawa cut the Lancers lead to 16 points heading into the fourth quarter.
However the Lancers would not be denied championship glory on this night as Wulff put the team on her back in the fourth quarter, at one point scoring eight straight points, to clinch the victory.
Wulff finished the game with 17 points and six rebounds and was named the Wilson Sports Equipment Canada Player of the Game. Emily Ross (New Minas, N.S.), who was a force at both ends of the court, finished with nine points and seven rebounds while Roc also finished with nine points.
Both the Lancers and Gee-Gees (17-8) move onto the CIS Women's Basketball Championship from March 6 to 8, hosted by the University of Regina in Regina, Sask. Live coverage of the semi-finals and final can be seen on The Score Television Network.
