OUA W-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: GOLDEN HAWKS SECURE PLAYOFF BERTH
After suffering two straight defeats last week, the Golden Hawks were looking to make amends in the final week of the season and secure their post-season position. Laurier opened up the first quarter by going on a scoring run and racking up an 11-point lead by the midway point. The Warriors would regroup and cut the deficit down to five to start the second. Waterloo would continue to build their momentum in the second, whittling Laurier's lead down to just two points by the half. At the break the home team held a 37-35 point lead.
Waterloo (7-14) would open up the third quarter with a game-tying basket of their own and would continue to score to open up a slim five-point margin before graduating player Laura Pacevicius (Acton, Ont.) went to work under the basket. Pacevicius took a tough shot from under the basket and was fouled to pick up three points on the play.
The Golden Hawks would then regain the lead and extend it to 10 points by the end of the frame. In the final quarter the Warriors made another run on the Hawks, led by Kimberly Lee (Ajax, Ont.), but it was too little too late as the home team would take this match.
Brkic (Mississauga, Ont.) led all Golden Hawk scorers with 20 points followed by Renata Adamczyk (Dundas, Ont.) and Pacevicius with 17, and Amanda McDonald (Sudbury, Ont.) with 12. Pacevicius also picked up 11 boards to earn her third double-double of the season.
Lee of the Warriors led all scorers with 31 points. Rachel Harnsworth (London, Ont.) was second on the visitors with 11. Top rebounder was Laura Becotte (Thunder Bay, Ont.) with eight.

NO. 10 WESTERN 56, MCMASTER 38
HAMILTON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's basketball team had a great defensive effort and held McMaster Marauders point guard Taylor Smith (Hamilton, Ont.) scoreless in a 56-38 win at Burridge Gymnasium on Feb. 11.
With the win in the low-scoring affair, Western clinches a first-round bye in the OUA West playoffs, finishing in second place for the third straight season. This time, however, it's ahead of the two-time defending division champion McMaster and behind first-place Windsor.
Bess Lennox (Ottawa, Ont.) had 17 points and 16 rebounds for another double-double.
Hometown girl Kelly Moulden (Dundas, Ont.) had five assists. Megan Lapointe (Burlington, Ont.) added 11 points and five boards, while Lauren Chan (Brantford, Ont.) had 10 rebounds.
The Mustangs held a 25-15 led at the half.
Sara Pilon-Bignell (Ancaster, Ont.) led the Marauders (13-8) with 14 points while Amanda D'Ortenzio (Hamilton, Ont.) had 12. They were the only two Marauders with over six points and only five McMaster players scored through the game.
Smith was scoreless in 34 minutes played and was 0-of-8 from the field. McMaster had just two opportunities from the charity stripe as Western played a disciplined game.
The Marauders shot just 26 percent from the field and were 2-of-22 from three-point range.
