OUA W-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: ROC SOLID FOR WINDSOR
With the victory, Windsor moves to 10-1 in conference play and sit firmly atop the OUA West Division standings.
On Wednesday night, the Gryphons came out ready to play as they held the potent Lancer offensive attack in check in the opening minutes. Both teams battled hard at both ends of the court and were tied after one quarter, 16-16.
In the second quarter, the Lancers broke the game wide open as Roc (Montreal, Que.) turned in a thrilling offensive display and helped her team build a 15-point lead. Roc notched 20 first-half points as the Lancers built a commanding 44-29 halftime lead.
The second half was more of the same as the Lancer offensive attack proved to be too much for the overmatched Gryphons. Windsor outscored Guelph 27-9 in the third quarter alone and cruised to the 91-62 victory.
Roc led all scorers with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting and also added seven assists in a tremendous all-around performance. Windsor also got 11 points apiece from Shavaun Reaney (Sherwood Park, Alta.), Iva Peklova (Prague, Czech Republic) and Laura Mullins (Windsor, Ont.) in the win.
Alisa Wulff (Pickering, Ont.) chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds while rookie standout Bojana Kovacevic (Windsor, Ont.) finished with six points and three rebounds.
The Lancers will be back in action this Saturday as they play host the Waterloo Warriors at 6 p.m. at the St. Denis Centre.

QUEEN'S 79, RMC 64
KINGSTON, Ont. - Brittany Moore (Hannon, Ont.) poured in a school-record 40 points as the Gaels defeated the Royal Military College Paladins 79-64 in a Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's basketball match on Wednesday night.
Moore broke former Gael and current assistant coach Claire Meadows' old regular season record by three-points. Meadows had scored 39 against Windsor in November 2006. Moore was nine points shy of tying the OUA single game mark (49) held by Candi Lohr (Brock) in 1982-83.
\"I felt good out there shooting, but I never expected to make 40. If I was open, I'd would take it, if not I'd look for the open man,\" said Moore. \"It's was a good game, it's nice to have and I'm happy about it.\"
Moore's previous high water mark came ironically against RMC earlier this season when she recorded 25 points in a regular season match on October 31.
The second-year physical education major, scored over half of the Gaels points dropping 11 three pointers in her 32 minutes on the floor. She was 61 percent from behind the arch and scored more points than her teammates combined (39).
Alaina Porter (Burlington, Ont.) was the Gaels next top scorer producing 10 points with nine rebounds.
Kim Egert (Westport, Ont.) was the Paladins leading scorer with 18 points followed by Sharlene Harding (Brampton, Ont.), who posted 16 points in the loss.
Queen's built a 37-29 advantage in the first half courtesy of six Moore three-pointers and then pulled away in the third quarter scoring 23 points while RMC managed only 18.
The Gaels improve their record to 4-6 while snapping a four game losing streak which dates back to Nov. 21. RMC record drops to 0-10 and are still looking for their first ever win since joining the league in 2003-04.
Queen's next home game is scheduled for Friday against the York Lions at 6 p.m. Tickets for the game are available by calling 613-533-2500 or at the door.

WESTERN 78, LAURIER 73
LONDON, Ont. - The Laurier Golden Hawks deserve full effort, pushing the Western Mustangs in a game that, on paper, should not have been as close.
The defending OUA West semifinalist Mustangs defeated Laurier 78-73 at Alumni Hall on Jan. 7 to improve to 8-3 on the season for sole possession of second place in the OUA West.
Bess Lennox (Ottawa, Ont.) was terrific in the opening half with 16 points and seven rebounds. She finished with a game-high 23 points and nine boards.
Amanda Anderson (Chatham, Ont.) was excellent in the second half, finishing with 20 points and five assists along with a steal, while Megan Lapointe (Burlington, Ont.) quietly scored 14 points and added 11 rebounds.
She was particularly effective in the paint.
Laurier took an early 11-10 lead when Laura Pacevicius (Acton, Ont.) came off the bench and put home a lay-up. Early on, it was a back-and-forth affair with Laurier giving Western all they could handle.
A Nadine Paron (Arva, Ont.) three-point bomb gave Western the 15-11 lead but poor Mustangs shooting on open looks limited Western's inability to take advantage of Laurier miscues, as the Golden Hawks stayed close early.
The Mustangs led 19-13 after the first quarter.
Without Lauren Parkes (London, Ont.) in the line-up, and Rebecca Moss (Waterloo, Ont.) still out with injury, Western relied on some unfamiliar faces to chip in, scoring six quick points to build a 12-point cushion.
A Lennox steal and then forced a turnover allowed the fourth-year forward to score to give Western a 29-15 edge.
Then Kim Hurley (Stratford, Ont.) pulled down a rebound and dished it inside to Lennox who scored to make it 31-20.
Western led 37-26 at the half.
In the second half, Laurier scored eight straight points to pull within three at 37-34, with the Mustangs shooting cold like the snow and sleet falling outside.
A long two-pointer from Hurley gave Western its first points of the half, almost three minutes in.
However, Lapointe's presence in the post gave Laurier fits as Western re-established a nine-point lead, due in large part to the Mustang forward's strong play and determination.
After Paron worked hard to earn a spin-around jumper to extend the lead to 10 points, Hurley's tenacious defence forced a steal and fed freshman Kelly Moulden (Dundas, Ont.) for a nice transition basket.
Western led 62-50, extending the lead to as much as 15
An impressive 12-point Laurier run to close out the game pulled the Hawks within six, but Western held on for the win.
Kandice Baptiste (Shannonville, Ont.) hit a banker for three to make the final 78-73 Mustangs.
The Golden Hawks fall to 4-7 and were led by a 17-point performance from Aleksa Brkic (Mississauga, Ont.). Laurier's bench out-scored Western 23-8.
The Mustangs travels to play a pair of road games at Guelph Jan. 10 and Waterloo Jan. 14 before hosting the defending OUA West champion McMaster Marauders on Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. at Alumni Hall.

With the Badgers leading 36-35 early in the third quarter, they would go on a 15-3 run to go up by as many as 13 points 51-38 with over two minutes left in the quarter.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Brock led 60-51, before the Warriors would go on a 10-2 run making it a one point game 62-61 with just over three minutes remaining.
Next possession, senior Lauren Stewart (Hamilton, Ont.) would answer back with a clutch three-pointer, which led to an 8-0 run, as Brock once again led by nine 70-61. Waterloo would bring it to within four points late, but the Badgers would come out with a strong home victory.
