RAVENS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT
Due to NCAA regulations, the new faces on Vermont's squad couldn't participate in the team's tour north of the border. So, the Catamounts had a short bench of only seven returning players.
Coming off their best regular season finish in the program's history, the Ravens came out strong in their first exhibition game of the year leading 7-4. But, they weren't able to contain the defending America East champion Catamounts. Vermont went on a 12-point run to jump ahead 13-7 in the first five minutes of play. But, the Ravens battled back and narrowed Vermont's lead to only four points. Vermont pulled away again leading 40-29 at the half.
In the second half, the Catamounts showed that despite their numbers, they were still a force to be reckoned with, outscoring the Ravens 25-9 in the first 10 minutes. The Ravens again tried to narrow the gap but it wasn't enough as the Catamounts went on to win 82-60.
Two of the standout players on Vermont's roster have Canadian blood running through their veins - Ottawa native Courtnay Pilypaitis and Waterloo, Ont. native May Kotsopoulos. Pilypaitis represented Canada at this year's Summer Universiade in Belgrade, Serbia and both athletes were named to the 2007 America East all-rookie team.
On Thursday, the high-scoring duo combined for 32 points, including a nine-point run in the second half by Kotsopoulos. Kelli Hier (Winooski, Vt.) scored a game-high 20 points.
Courtney Smith (Ottawa) and Kendall MacLeod (Brockville, Ont.) led the Ravens with 12 points each. Ashleigh Cleary (Kemptville, Ont.) also chipped in for the Ravens with 10 points.
Vermont and Carleton both finished with 25 rebounds. Second-year guard Alyson Bush (Ottawa) led the Ravens with seven, while Alissa Sheftic (Essex Junction, Vt.) led the Catamounts with eight rebounds.
The Catamounts will play two more games in Canada before returning home to Burlington, Vt.
The Ravens next NCAA match-up is against Fairleigh Dickinson University on Aug. 28 at 8 p.m.
