OUA EAST ALL-STARS WIN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ALL-STAR GAME
In a game full of emotion, skilled plays and determined efforts, the OUA Women's Basketball All-Star can certainly be deemed a success. With pride on the line, the OUA East and West women's basketball conferences battled it out in a sea-saw affair that would come down to the final quarter of play.
The first quarter started off with the East and West getting a feel for their new teammates and working the ball nicely around the outside. In what was a back and fourth quarter, the highlight was two back-to-back three's by Toronto guard and OUA East player of the year Alaine Hutton (Hamilton, Ont.). Hutton followed up her six straight points with a field goal to go on an 8-0 run and to give the East squad a slight 16-13 edge after one quarter.
In the second quarter, the West would begin to gel as a team and work the inside game with crisps passing from McMaster Marauders guard Taylor Smith (Hamilton, Ont.). Smith would find Alisa Wulff (Pickering, Ont.) of the Windsor Lancers early and often to swing the momentum back in the favour of the West. Heading into halftime, the West took the lead by six points with a score of 41-35.
The third and fourth quarter was a different story, as the East would take over and display their smooth touch from the line. The East went 11-of-14 from the free throw line in the second quarter and took over the game. Outscoring the West by five points in the third quarter, the game was tied at 58 heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth saw a pair of Varsity Blues dominate the game hitting shot after shot. Nicki Schutz (Toronto, Ont.) was the leading scorer in the game going 8-of-14 from the field and notching 21 points on the game. Hutton was the second leading scorer with 20 points and was named the OUA East player of the game. With additional support from Carleton's Ines Jelic (nine points) and York Lions guard Laura MacCallum (Paris, Ont.) playing her final game in OUA (seven points), the East All-Stars would dominate the fourth quarter and take the victory by a score of 77-64.
Top scorer from the West was Wulff going 6-of-7 from the field with 18 points. Wulff was named the OUA West player of the game. OUA West defensive player of the year Renata Adamczyk (Dundas, Ont.) was the second leading scorer from the West with 11 points. Rounding out the top scorers for the West was Kathryn Verboom (Thunder Bay, Ont.) from the Lakehead Wolves and Amanda Anderson (Dover Centre, Ont.) of the Western Mustangs.
The OUA would like to thank the Ontario Basketball Association for helping host a great event and look forward to making the OUA Women's Basketball All-Star game an annual tradition.
