CIS Top 10: York men's soccer and Guelph women's rugby rank number one; Queen's women's soccer hold second spot
In women’s rugby, the defending CIS champion St. Francis Xavier X-Women were stunned 44-13 by Acadia in their season opener last Friday, a result which put an end to a remarkable 60-game overall winning streak against AUS opponents and which marked their first league loss since Oct. 16, 2004 (15-11 vs. UPEI).
The X-Women (1-1), who topped the inaugural coaches poll of 2013 a week ago, rebounded on Sunday with an 88-0 shutout against St. Thomas but still drop all the way to No. 6 in the new Top 10.
The new team to beat in CIS women’s rugby is last year’s national silver medallists, the Guelph Gryphons, who opened OUA play over the weekend with a dominating 43-5 victory against Waterloo. Acadia (1-0) moves up five spots to No. 5 in this week’s poll thanks to its impressive win over StFX.
In men’s soccer, the 2012 CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds also saw their reign atop the national rankings end after only one week. UBC (1-1) kicked off its regular schedule on Friday with a solid 4-1 road win against archrival Victoria but then dropped a 1-0 decision to Fraser Valley in its home opener on Sunday. The T-Birds, who now occupy the No. 4 spot, had not lost in 27 matches overall, dating back to the 2011 Canada West final (1-0 vs. Alberta).
Taking over at No. 1 in the new poll are the York Lions, who improved to 4-0 in OUA action over the weekend with a 2-0 blanking of Guelph and a 5-1 defeat of Western. Carleton (3-0-1) and Montreal (2-0) also moved past UBC in the rankings.
In women’s soccer, the reigning CIS champ Trinity Western Spartans (0-0-1) were also tested in their season opener but managed a scoreless draw against No. 7 UBC (0-0-1).
The Spartans keep the pole position in this week’s Top 10 but edged the Queen’s Gaels (3-0-1) – the team they beat in PKs in last year’s CIS final - by a single point in the voting.
