Western 3 at UOIT 0
OSHAWA, Ont. – A trio of first half goals propelled the Western Mustangs men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday afternoon at Vaso's Field.
With the win, the Mustangs now hold a record of 5-3-2 and sit only one point out of fourth place in the OUA West Division while the Ridgebacks fall to 1-9-1 on the year.
In the opening half of the contest the Mustangs dominated the play and created a number of scoring opportunities. Western took an early lead when Fillippo Iuliani netted the first goal of the game at the 10-minute mark. Just nine minutes later the Mustangs furthered their advantage after Aaron Schneebell scored the second goal of the game to secure a 2-0 lead. Western kept the momentum going as Oliver Richardson racked up another Mustang goal just two minutes later to create a 3-0 advantage over the Ridgebacks heading into the break.
The Ridgebacks offence came out strong in the second half and looking to bounce back and cut the Mustangs lead. UOIT was able to force through the Mustangs defence and fire off three shots on Mustangs goaltender Adam Majer while only allowing the Mustangs to create four shots on Ridgebacks goaltender Karan Thaker throughout the second half. Despite stronger pressure from their opponents the Mustangs maintained their lead and claimed a 3-0 victory.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 2, when they travel to Windsor to face the Lancers at 8:15 p.m.

Guelph 2 at McMaster 2
The No. 6 McMaster men's soccer team were down by two goals, but rallied to gain an important point by playing to a 2-2 draw with the visiting the No. 8 Guelph Gryphons.
The Marauders came out flat after their loss Friday at Windsor and Guelph went after them right from the start. The Gryphons had several good chances and it was only the work of Maroon keeper Angelo Cavalluzzo that kept Guelph off the board.
In the 26th minute, Guelph's Rob Murphy lined up a free kick from the top of the box and his drive was saved by Cavalluzzo, but Tim Flynn headed the ball off the crossbar and it went in off the keeper to give the Gryphons the 1-0 lead.
Guelph continued to put on the pressure and Flynn scored again, as he headed in a perfect cross to extend the lead to 2-0.
McMaster made some substitutions in the second half as Coach Dino Perri was looking for some offense, down by two goals.
In the 70th minute, Nate Morris broke the ice as he corralled a loose ball off a corner kick and drove a shot into the left corner to make it 2-1.
With some momentum from the goal, the Marauders continued to push and were rewarded in the 84th minute when substitute striker Gersi Xhuti drilled home a goal almost identical to the strike from Morris to tie the game at 2-2.
With Guelph now holding on, McMaster continued to press but could not take the lead before the final whistle.
McMaster now heads to York on Saturday, Oct. 5th for a big game against the division leading Lions.

Laurentian 2 at Carleton 1
The No. 6 Carleton Ravens have seen enough of the Laurentian Voyageurs.
In the past eight days, Laurentian and Carleton have met up on the pitch for two games in OUA East action.
Both matches have not had happy endings for the Ravens.
Last Saturday, Sept.21, the Voyageurs defeated Carleton 2-1 in Sudbury. On Sunday, the Voyageurs travelled to Carleton for a rematch at Ravens Field.
The change in playing venue didn’t matter as Laurentian was at it again, as they defeated Carleton 2-1.
“We (Carleton) had some good individual performances today but in the end, we are still having problems scoring,” said Ravens head coach, Sandy Mackie.
“I thought that Theodore Lopez de Castilla, Joey Kewan, Mintcho Mintchev and Andrew Latty had solid games.”
Ian Wolfe (32nd, 70th) provided all the offence for Laurentian.
Midfield Joey Kewin (London, ON) infused some life into the Ravens when he scored in the 85th minute but Carleton could not close the gap and suffered their second loss of the season and second straight to the Voyageurs.
Carleton’s record falls to (5-2-2) and 17 points in the OUA East division while Laurentian improves to (5-1-2) and 17 points after 8 games.
Carleton hit the road next weekend for two games. On Saturday, Oct. 5 the Ravens will be at Trent University in Peterborough. Game time is 2:15 p.m. The following day Sunday, Oct. 6 Carleton will visit RMC at Kingston beginning at 3:15 p.m.

York 4 at Brock 1
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Facing the top team in the country, Brock's men's soccer team fell to 0-7-3 this season after dropping a 4-1 decision to the No.1 York Lions on Sunday. The loss puts Brock 8th in the OUA West Standings heading into next week.
York got on the scoreboard first, when Carlos Nogueira notched his first goal of the campaign at the 17-minute mark.
It didn't take long for the home squad to respond, as Sammy Orlando scored for the first time this season in the 31st minute. Orlando has led Brock in scoring the last two seasons.
Brock's Ben Haggith was sent off with a red card late in the first half, which was the first time in his career he has been ejected.
After a back-and-forth pace to open the second half, the Lions found their offensive touch in the 65th with Mark-Anthony Kaye's first of two eventual goals in the game. Nicolas Mejia added a marker of his own in the 90th minute to give York the 4-1 victory.
In net for Brock, Jake Sweetzer stopped five of nine shots.
Next week, the Badgers host UOIT on Saturday in a crucial conference home game, before traveling to Waterloo on Sunday to face the Warriors.

Toronto 0 at Ryerson 3
TORONTO – The No. 5 nationally ranked Ryerson Rams men’s soccer team remain undefeated on the season after they earned a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday afternoon at Monarch Park Stadium.
Sunday’s victory, along with a 3-0 win over the Blues back on Sept. 15, earned the Rams their first ever season sweep over Toronto.
After some quality scoring opportunities by both teams were denied by the goalkeepers, Ryerson’s Viktor Anastasov (Toronto) notched his first goal of the season in the 45th minute, finishing a header from a Martin Dabrowski (Barrie, Ont.) cross.
Anastasov’s goal would hold up as the game-winner but the Rams added two insurance goals in the second half. Alex Braletic (Thornhill, Ont.) found the back of the net for the ninth time this season in the 58th minute while Armin Tankovic (Mississauga, Ont.) scored his fourth of the year in the 72nd minute to round out the scoring.
Ryerson (7-0-1) continues to hold onto first place in the OUA east division standings and half way through the season the coaching staff is pleased with the results but won’t be settling with the play any time soon.
“From a results point of view (we are) maybe exceeding my expectations a little bit. From a development, how we want to play (standpoint), I think we still have a lot of growth to do…I don’t think we’re quite firing on all cylinders yet so we have work to do on that front”, said associate coach Fil Prostran following the game.
The Rams return to action next weekend when they hit the road for games against Laurentian and Nipissing in Sudbury and North Bay.

Nipissing 1 at Carleton 2
The members of previous Ravens’ rosters cheered on the current edition and had plenty to cheer and sing about as Carleton edged Nipissing 2-1 in a spirited affair on Alumni Day at Ravens Field.
“Nipissing is a difficult team to play against they compete and work hard,” said Sandy Mackie, Ravens head coach.
“We (Carleton) had about nine quality scoring chances against Nipissing in the first half but we kept kicking the ball right at their goalkeeper. As the season winds down, it’s imperative that we execute better.”
The Ravens were on the hunt for a win against the Lakers after Nipisssing and Carleton played to a scoreless draw last Sunday in North Bay.
Nipissing took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute courtesy of a bad bounce that hopped over the outstretched hands of Ravens goalkeeper, Travis Chace.
Striker Andrew Latty (Ottawa, ON) replied for Carleton seven minutes later (40th) on a brilliant header to even the score 1-1.
It was Latty’s eighth marker of the season.
Mackie made several bold moves during the match substituting veterans Joey Kewin, Mekonen Lovemore-White and Latty for indifferent play.
“Every player on our team has to contribute and perform, if they don’t, I won’t hesitate in making changes,” explained the veteran coach.
The moves paid off as the Ravens played with a new found energy and controlled the game for long stretches in the second half.
Carleton’s hard work and perseverance paid off when Alex Cosovic (Toronto, ON) deposited the winning goal past the Lakers goalkeeper in the 83rd minute.
“I took the ball down, saw an opening in the goal and finished it off,” said Cosovic.
“It was a nice feeling to come from behind, the subs gave us a new energy which we fed off and used to our advantage.”
Carleton’s record improves to 5-1-2 in the OUA East division while Nipissing drops to 2-5-1.
The Ravens and Laurentian Voyageurs will meet up at Ravens Field on Sunday, Sept.29. Game time is 3:15 p.m.

Trent 0 at Queen’s 1
KINGSTON, Ont. (September 28, 2013) - Chris Michael's (Ottawa) last-minute heroics broke the deadlock as the Gaels topped the Trent Excalibur 1-0 on Saturday at the West Campus Field.
The score was level through the first 45 minutes, as the Gaels keeper Dylan Maxwell (Vancouver) saved all three shots he faced, while Trent's goalkeeper David Ellis went untested.
The Gaels held the majority of possession throughout the game, but only started to connect with their strikers late in the second half.
In the 81st minute, Greg Simmons (Whitby, Ont.) beat his man down the right wing and crossed the ball into the box, where Michael blasted it off the crossbar. Michael continued to press, hitting the crossbar again a few minutes later with a diving header from a William Twardek (Ottawa) cross. Michael was rewarded in the 85th minute, when his shot sailed over Ellis and into the net.
Trent tried to respond with a strike from Riley Brennan, but Maxwell was able to hold on for the save and the clean-sheet.
The Gaels (4-2-2) will be at West Campus again on Friday, when they play the RMC Paladins (1-4-1) at 5:30 p.m.

UOIT 1 at Laurier 4
WATERLOO, Ont. (September 27, 2013) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks played host to the UOIT Ridgebacks in their second meeting of the season. After a tough loss to York the week before, the Hawks rebounded thanks to an offence that contributed four markers to lead Laurier to a 4-1 win.
After an even first half, the Hawks opened the second half soaring, earning two early markers from Adrian Bucksam of Mississauga, Ont., and Matthew Maughn of Mississauga, Ont. UOIT responded to Laurier's quick offensive surge, as Justin Gordon of Pickering, Ont., buried off of a penalty kick to bring the game within one.
Laurier, however, continued their strong offensive performance as Niklas Bauer of Newmarket, Ont., scored late in the 88th minute to put the Hawks up by two. Maughn added an insurance marker in 90th minute, scoring his second of the game, and securing the win for the Golden Hawks.
Laurier goaltender Mackenzie Craig of Ajax, Ont., made his Golden Hawk debut, turning away all three of UOIT's chances to keep the Ridgebacks scoreless. Craig received a red card in the second half and was relieved by Brett Harrington of Tillsonburg, Ont.
The Hawks will look to build off of this win as they host the Waterloo Warriors on October 4th for the Battle of Waterloo. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. at University. Tickets for the game can be purchased at tickets.laurierathletics.com.

York 2 at Western 1
LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs men's soccer team took to Huron Flats Fields for their first matchup on the new pitch, dropping a hard fought 2-1 contest to the CIS No. 1 York Lions on Friday night.
"We played a lot better today, we had a couple different guys in the line-up so that helped us out. I was pleased with the performance," said Mustangs head coach Rock Basacco.
The Mustangs and the Lions have quite the rivalry already this season as the Lions defeated the Mustangs 5-1 in their first meeting earlier this month. It was clear that the Mustangs were looking to give the Lions some strong competition in tonight's game, and prove that they can battle with a No. 1 ranked team. After tonight's contest the Mustangs hold a 3-3-2 record in the OUA West Division, while the Lions remain their hold atop the OUA with at 8-1-0.
The game opened with both teams battling aggressively for the possession of the ball and to control the play. Lions goaltender Sotiri Varlokostas saved two Mustangs goals in the first half of the action, while Mustangs goaltender Adam Majer stopped three shots fired off by the Lions. At the 19th minute of play the Lions received a penalty in the 18-yard box which set Mustangs Jovan Ivanovich up to score the first goal of the game, creating a 1-0 lead for the purple and white. However, the Mustangs were not ahead for long as the Lions rallied back just six minutes later with a goal from Johnathan Lao. Although both teams fought hard to try and secure an advantage on the scoreboard, the match headed into the break with a score of 1-1.
The second half saw tensions beginning to rise between the two teams. Possession pinballed between the both sides of the field for a large portion of the action, before the Lions Matt Stinson netted York's second goal of the game at the 62 minute mark, to give the Lions a 2-1 lead. With emotions running high, and tempers boiling over the dying minutes of the game saw an influx of yellow cards by both the Lions and the Mustangs. Despite Western's efforts to try and maneuver past the Lions defence and cut the lead, the clock ran out and the match concluded with a 2-1 victory for York.
"Whenever you play an intense game emotions are going to get a little bit high. We've got a pretty good rivalry going with York," Basacco stated. "We still gave up the ball a little too much and we need to work on possession so that we can create some attack [but] I was proud of the way they played today."
The Mustangs are back in action Sunday at 1:00 p.m. as the travel to Oshawa to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks.

McMaster 0 at Windsor 1
The Windsor Lancers brought the Marauder men's soccer team's lengthy winning streak to an abrupt halt on Friday night. The Lancers rode a first-half goal from Derrick Amankwa to a 1-0 victory, putting an end to McMaster's streak at six games.
The result was only the Marauders (6-2-1) second loss of the OUA season, and marked the second time McMaster has been held off the scoresheet in 2013.
Amankwa scored what proved to be the game's only goal in the 34th minute, as the Lancers held the Marauders at bay in a scoreless second half to take all three points on the night. McMaster forced Windsor goalkeeper Dejo Olagbegi into action on seven occasions, but the fifth-year senior proved up to the challenge on each.
The Marauders will look to bounce back when they return to action – and their home field – on Sunday. They welcome their closest rivals in the OUA West standings, the Guelph Gryphons (6-1-2), to Ron Joyce Stadium for a matinee game slated to start at 3:15 p.m.
