M-Soccer Roundup: Carleton and McMaster win in midweek action
October 9
Queen’s 1 at Carleton 4
Thank you Joey Kewin!
The Ravens fifth-year midfielder from London, Ont., was an offensive juggernaut on Wednesday night, as he provided half of Carleton’s offence in their 4-1 victory over the Queen’s Gaels.
Kewin scored in the third minute to give the Ravens an early 1-0 lead then found the back of the net once again, roughly half an hour later to put Carleton up by a pair of goals, 2-0.
The ball seemed to be following Kewin for the entire contest as he potted his eighth and ninth goals of the season for Carleton.
“We (Carleton) got a great start against Queen’s and gained momentum from it,” said Kewin. “Tonight’s win was a total team effort, we scored four times but we could have had more.”
The Ravens finally showed the offensive flair that had been missing during their last couple of games.
“We played well tonight, when we show up, we can play with anybody in this league,” said Ravens head coach, Sandy Mackie. “Joey (Kewin) and Andrew (Latty) were solid along with Mintcho Mintchev. I’m very happy for Alex De Couvreur who scored his first goal of the year.”
Andrew Latty (67th) joined the scoring parade when he picked up his 8th goal of the season to give the Ravens a commanding 3-0 lead.
Queen’s cut into Carleton’s lead with a goal to make it 3-1 but Alexandre De Couvreur (Waterloo, ON) scored on a breakaway for Carleton in the 90th minute to seal the win.
The Ravens record improves to (8-2-2) and 26 points. Carleton occupy second place in the OUA East division.
Queen’s record slides to (5-3-2) and fourth place in the division.
Ryerson are at the top of the standings with a (9-0-1) record and 28 points.
Carleton and Ryerson will meet on Saturday, Oct. 19. Game time at Ravens Field is 8:00 p.m.

McMaster 2 at Western 0
LONDON, Ont. - The Mustangs men's soccer team fell 2-0 to the OUA West third-ranked McMaster Marauders on Western's home turf Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Mustangs hold a 4-6-2 record in the OUA West division while the Marauders sit in third place in the OUA West with a record of 9-2-2 on the season.
"I thought the boys played really well," said Mustangs head coach Rock Basacco. "We had some really good chances, we moved the ball well and defended extremely well. We're just struggling to put that ball in the net."
In the opening half of the match the Mustangs and the Marauders battled strongly with both teams fighting to take the early advantage. McMaster's Kody Kazda was able to get the Marauders onto the scoreboard first as he netted a goal just after the thirty minute mark, giving his team a 1-0 lead. Despite Western's efforts to regroup and try to cut the Marauders lead, they were unable to put themselves onto the scoreboard going into the break.
In the second half both sides continued to apply strong offensive pressure and were able to generate a number of scoring opportunities.
McMaster's Nathaniel Morris was able to further the Marauders lead late in the half as he scored the second goal of the game at the 83-minute mark to set the score at 2-0. The Mustangs battled down to the dying minutes of the match but were unable to hit the back of the net and when the final whistle blew the Marauders walked off the pitch with a 2-0 shutout victory over the purple and white.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 12, as they gear up against the Brock Badgers at 3:15 p.m. on Western's Huron Flats Field.
