M-Soccer Roundup: York dominates Brock with 8-0 win
The York University Lions men's soccer team cruised to a dominant 8-0 victory over the Brock Badgers on Monday afternoon (Sept. 2) in their home opener at the York Soccer Pitch.
Jonathan Lao (Unionville, Ont.), Joseph Cicchillo (North York, Ont.) and Mark-Anthony Kaye (Toronto) each scored two goals in the contest. Lao, a first-year midfielder with the Lions, has scored four goals on the season in just two games.
The Lions wasted no time getting on the board, scoring just six minutes into the game on Lao's third of the season. Six minutes later Kaye netted his first of the year, and then Cicchillo scored back-to-back goals in the 25th and 36th minutes to make it 4-0 in favour of the Lions.
Kaye scored his second of the game before the half was done and the Lions carried a 5-0 lead into the break.
It took just 14 minutes in the second half before the Lions got on the board again with Lao's second of the game in the 59th minute.
Fourth-year defender Casey D'Mello (Mississauga, Ont.) gave the Lions a seven-goal lead in the 74th minute on a shot from 30 yards out that found the back of the net. Second-year forward Domenic Gullo (Newmarket, Ont.) rounded out the scoring with his first of the season on a penalty shot in the 88th minute.
Fifth-year goalkeeper Sotiri Varlokostas (Toronto) earned the shutout in net, his first of the season, with one save in one half of play. With the game comfortably in hand at the break he was relieved by Colm Vance (Bradford, Ont.), who was not forced to make a save in his 45 minutes of play.
Taking the loss for the Badgers was Jake Sweetzer (Mississauga, Ont.), who faced eight shots and made two saves in 66 minutes of action. He was replaced by Noah Mar (North York, Ont.), who faced four shots and made two saves in 21 minutes.
The Lions, who are 2-0-0 on the year, will look to continue their winning streak next weekend when they travel to Guelph, Ont., to face the Gryphons on Saturday (Sept. 7) at 3:15 p.m. Their next home game is on Sunday (also at 3:15 p.m.) against the Western Mustangs.

Sept. 1 Laurier @ Waterloo
The Waterloo Warriors put together a strong 90 minutes against the Laurier Golden Hawks, but lost 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field, one day after losing 4-0 to the Western Mustangs.
Waterloo opened Sunday's game determined to shake off Saturday's loss to the Mustangs, but could not find the net in the early going. The Warriors best chance came off the foot of Mohamed Aborig (Tripoli) but the opportunity was turned aside by Golden Hawks keeper Brett Harrington.
Laurier scored the game's only goal in the 35th minute as Adrian Bucksam potted his own rebound past rookie keeper Thomas Modjesch (Romania). Bucksam, Laurier's player of the game, was a force for the Hawks in this match with five shots to go with his marker. Modjesch, who was impressive in his own fashion making several highlight reel saves, saved six of seven and was named the Warrior player of the game.
His counterpart, Harrington, turned aside three shots for the shutout.
Waterloo will look for their first win of the season as part of black and gold day on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Warrior Field.

Windsor @ Western
LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs men's soccer team finished up their opening weekend of action on Sunday afternoon, earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Windsor Lancers at TD Stadium.
"I'm proud of the second half and how they played," said Mustangs head coach Rock Basacco. "We did create some good chances but also conceded a couple as well. (It was) a bit of a slow start in the first half, so that's something we'll have to look at as a coaching staff and see what we can do to get the boys playing quicker in the first half so that we get into our game plan earlier."
The Mustangs hold an undefeated record after the opening weekend of the regular season, defeating the Waterloo Warriors 4-0 on Saturday in the team's season opener. With the loss, the Lancers drop 0-1-1 on the year, falling to York 2-1 in their other contest.
It was a tight battle for the majority of the match with neither team holding a sizable advantage over the other. The Lancers opened the scoring in the 31st minute off of a goal from Joseph Comaj, while the Mustangs fired back in the 52nd minute when Luke Sewell scored his second goal of the weekend to tie the score. Despite a flurry of scoring chances for both teams in the latter part of the second half the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Ivan Skoko manned the Western net in the draw while Dejo Olagbegi was Windsor's goalkeeper.
With two games in the books, Basacco knows that there are still some things for his team to improve upon, but he's happy with the team's play this weekend.
"It's a good start. Obviously we would have wanted six points, but I give credit to Windsor they played a good game. There are things that we need to work on if we're going to keep going further. Again it's just eliminating tendencies we have right now early in the season that we need to change a little bit to get us going in a more positive direction."
The Mustangs are back in action next weekend, hosting the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sept. 7 at TD Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.

McMaster @ Guelph
The Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team played an intense season opener today against the McMaster Marauders at the Guelph Soccer Complex ending in a 1-1 tie.
Guelph started the game by playing physically and utilizing their speed, which kept the Marauders on their heels, stretching the field and keeping players spaced out to both sidelines. The Gryphons played aggressively, staying on the ball at all times, but had issues keeping possession, which ultimately lead to McMaster outshooting the Gryphons 2-0 in the first half.
Despite the physicality and aggressive nature shown by both teams, the score remained 0-0 for the first half.
The Marauders looked energized in the second half of the game, leading to a goal by Marco Gennaccaro (Hamilton, Ont.) in the 78th minute of the game. The Marauders came close to a second goal shortly after, but a timely save by Gryphons goalkeeper Chad Paproni (Burlington, Ont.) ensured that McMaster would not put another point on the board.
Guelph players Jared Agyemang and Jamie Wilcock battled hard to score for Guelph, but added pressure from the McMaster defensemen made it impossible.
The Gryphons continued to battle, but did not catch a break until a penalty shot was awarded in the last minutes of the game. Robert Murphy capitalized on the opportunity and put Guelph on the board for a 1-1 tie.
The Gryphons play the UOIT Ridgebacks in Oshawa on Wednesday, Sept. 4th at 6:00 p.m.

Carleton @ Ryerson
TORONTO – Last minute heroics from freshman Cameron Galea-Andrews (Oakville, Ont.) helped the Ryerson Rams men’s soccer team open their season with a 2-2 draw against the visiting Carleton Ravens on Sunday afternoon.
Ryerson dictated the pace of the game for the first 10 minutes, including a great scoring chance for Viktor Anastasov (Toronto) who was able to get by the keeper but could not beat a sliding Ravens defender.
On their first attacking opportunity the Ravens were awarded a penalty kick and Julian Piccioli (Ottawa, Ont.) converted to give Carleton a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.
Ryerson tied the score in the 38th minute when a deep kick from keeper Christian Maraldo (Mississauga, Ont.) found a streaking Luka Lee (Toronto). Lee’s cross bounced off a couple of bodies before falling right to Alex Braletic (Thornhill, Ont.) who buried his shot in the bottom left corner.
The two teams played an even game to open the second half, but in the 74th minute Ravens striker Andrew Latty (Ottawa, Ont.) was left unmarked on a corner kick and tapped home a short kick to give Carleton a 2-1 advantage.
In search of a tying goal, Ryerson began to press in the late stages of the game and generated several quality scoring chances, including a Nick Lambis (Pickering, Ont.) header that sailed just over the crossbar with five minutes remaining.
Late in added injury time, defender Jacob O’Connor (Ottawa, Ont.) launched a booming entry ball towards the goal and Cameron Galea-Andrews was able to get his head on the ball before the keeper could secure it, tying the score up at 2-2.
Sunday’s match was a physical one throughout the entire contest. Last season the Rams went 7-1-6 in the regular season and their only loss came against the Ravens. Carleton also eliminated Ryerson from postseason play so a lot was on the line for the Rams.
“Usually our issue is playing physical against Carleton," said associate coach Fil Prostran. "We’ve always had the talent but we’ve never been able to match their physicality and I thought today we did. Guys like Sebastian (Novais), Jacob (O’Connor), and even the rookies that came on. Lambis and Velasquez did a great job for us off the bench. We learned we were deeper than we thought we were."
Ryerson returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 7 when they host the Laurentian Voyageurs at 2:15 p.m. at Monarch Park Stadium.

Aug. 31 Carleton @ Toronto
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team opened their 2013 season with a 1-0 loss to the Carleton Ravens on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Varsity Centre.
Carleton's Theodore Lopex de Castilla (Ottawa) notched the game's lone goal in the 35th minute, sending a booming shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
The Blues opened the second half with pressure and veteran striker Mario Kovacevic had the best chance to score on a cross from Veljko Lukovic, but the ball sailed wide of the net. First-year Blues midfielder Nikolay Saveliev also looked to have the equalizer, but rang his shot off the post minutes later.
The Varsity Blues return to the field next Saturday, Sept. 7 as they host the Nipissing Lakers at Varsity Centre. Game time is set for 2:15 p.m.

Brock @ UOIT
OSHAWA, Ont. – Sebastian Dignoti (Oshawa, Ont.) scored a late goal on Saturday to give the UOIT men’s soccer team a 1-1 draw against Brock in their 2013 home opener.
With UOIT trailing 1-0 with less than 20 minutes remaining in the game, Dignoti managed to shake away a Brock defender and put the ball past veteran goalkeeper Jake Sweetzer to level the score.
The teams traded chances down the stretch but were both unable to strike again as the final result ended in a 1-1 tie.
UOIT starting goalkeeper Matt Caldaroni (Pickering, Ont.) allowed Brock’s lone goal 32 minutes into the game, as Erik Van Wissen scored the fifth goal of his career. Caldaroni turned aside three-of-four shots in the first half, before being replaced by Travis Martin (Whitby, Ont.) due to an injury. Martin stopped both shots he faced in the second half to earn the draw.
Sweetzer, who is in his senior year with the Badgers, stopped nine-of-10 UOIT shots on target. Over half of UOIT’s shots were off the foot of Dignoti.
UOIT will be back in action on home turf on Wednesday, Sept. 4 as they host the Guelph Gryphons at 6 p.m.

Waterloo @ Western
LONDON, Ont. – Three second half goals, including two less than three minutes apart, powered the Western Mustangs men's soccer team to a 4-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday afternoon at TD Stadium.
"I feel very good [about the team's performance]," said Mustangs head coach Rock Basacco. "It's a good start, always good to get a win in the first game of the season. Obviously there are still some things we need to fine tune, but we're moving in the right direction so I'm very pleased."
Saturday's contest was the first regular season matchup for both teams in 2013. The Mustangs had a strong exhibition season going 3-1 with wins over Montreal, Sherbrooke, and Toronto with the team's sole loss coming against Queen's in the finals of the Old Four Tournament last weekend.
Four different Mustangs players found the score sheet with Taso Bojouves, Christian Douglas, Mackenzie Baker, and Luke Sewell all firing shots into the Waterloo net. Baker and Sewell's goals closed out the game, coming less than three minutes apart in the latter portion of the second half.
"That's the way we need to play," said coach Basacco regarding his team's offensive outburst in the second half. "With the guys that we're able to put on they just got into the game and moved it really well. One-touch play, kept possession, and made [Waterloo] run a bit more."
Adam Majer recorded the shutout for the Mustangs while Thomas Modjesch suffered the loss in the Waterloo net.

York @ Windsor
WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's soccer team gave up two goals in the final 10 minutes of the their home opener, surrendering a late lead and falling to the York Lions 2-1 this past Saturday.
A Cristian Mayorga strike in the 71st minute found the left bottom corner of the net and broke a scoreless contest in the second half, but the upstart Lions responded by putting the Lancers on their back foot for the conclusion of the game. The pressure paid off when York forward Jonathan Lao scored twice at the 82nd and 88th minute.
After an opening half of both sides feeling each other out, the Lancers had a great spell of possession early in the second half.
"For the first 25 minutes we were all over them, we were dominating them," said Lancers coach Steve Hart.
The pressure paid off with a well-worked counter attack down the right side and Mayorga found himself with acres of space and slotted the ball home to put the home side up by one.
"We got the goal just as they (Lions) started to get a foot in the game," Hart commented. "But after that we sat off them and we can't back off on York. You have to close them down, the way they closed us down."
Jonathan Lao struck back in the 82nd minute with a tidy side foot finish and pounced again at the 88th minute after a miscommunication from the defenders.
"The game is 90 minutes and you have to play the full 90," said Hart in response to the late game drama.

Laurentian @ Trent
The Laurentian Voyageurs men’s soccer team took away three points in their season opener against the Trent Excalibur. The Voyageurs scored two goals early on in the game and held off for a 2-0 win.
The Voyageurs put Trent’s back line under pressure early on the game with Ian Wolfe (Orangeville, ON) netting his first of the season around the 20 minute mark. The game proved to be very physical from both teams, with the intensity increasing as the play progressed. Wolfe was able to convert on a free kick outside of Trent’s penalty box midway through the half, putting Laurentian up by two going into the second half.
The Voyageurs spent a fair share of the second half battling in their end, however they were able to hold off any goals. Seniors Cam Coulter (Sault St Marie, ON) and Cameron Brooks (Whitby, ON) provided Laurentian with a solid back line, stopping Trent from capitalizing on any opportunities. The game ended in a 2-0 victory for Laurentian, with Duncan Jobson (Bracebridge, ON) netting his first OUA shutout.

Aug. 30 Laurier @ McMaster
Playing on a slick field at Ron Joyce Stadium, the McMaster men's soccer team dropped its OUA opener 1-0 to the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks.
The Marauders carried the play for most of the first-half, but it was Mac keeper Angelo Cavalluzzo who came up with a dazzling save to keep his team from falling behind. Cavalluzzo dove to his right and stole a goal from the foot of a Laurier shooter.
Laurier was content to fill up the box, pressure McMaster and then counter-attack, allowing the Marauders to control possession but get few good scoring opportunities.
Mac's Marco Gennaccaro made a great run down the left side late in the match, but was thwarted by Laurier's Brett Harrington. Gennaccaro was able to flick the rebound across the open Laurier goal, but no Mac shooter was in position for the tap in.
With the game scoreless after 90 minutes, it was Golden Hawk Matthew Maughn who made a dangerous charge toward the McMaster net, getting taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick in extra time. With only seconds remaining, Maughn was able to beat Cavalluzzo from the spot to steal the win.
