Laurentian's Ian Wolfe named CIS male athlete of the week
OTTAWA (CIS) – Alanna Fittes, a rugby player from the University of Alberta, and Ian Wolfe, a soccer player from Laurentian University, are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 22, 2013.
Fittes, a third-year physical education and recreation student from Rimbey, Alta., accounted for over half of her team’s offence last Saturday as the nationally second-ranked Pandas opened the regular season with a dominating 62-17 home win against No. 9 Calgary. The 5-foot-3 junior scored four tries and added six converts in the game to finish with an impressive 32 points. Reigning Canada West champion Alberta (1-0) hits the road this weekend to face UBC (0-1) on Friday and Victoria (1-0) on Sunday.
Caroline McIlroy, a cross-country runner from Memorial, Léa Chastenay-Joseph, a soccer player from Laval, and Ally Evanyshyn, a field hockey player from Toronto, were also nominated for the women’s award.
Wolfe, a second-year sport and physical education major from Orangeville, Ont., provided all of the offence for the Voyageurs in a 2-1 upset win over then No. 1-ranked Carleton, Saturday in Sudbury. The 5-foot-8 forward opened the scoring in the 35th minute and, after the Ravens tied it early in the second half, he tallied the game-winner in the 70th minute of play. Laurentian and Carleton, who are tied for second place in the OUA East with identical 4-1-2 records, face off again on Sunday, this time in Ottawa.
Soccer player Natneal Tecle of StFX, Kenan Morina of Montreal and Paul Clerc of UBC were the other male nominees.
