Yorkâ??s Lao honoured as CIS male athlete of the week
Keller, a third-year English student from Quebec City, opened the regular season with a three-try performance Monday afternoon in Montreal to lead the nationally sixth-ranked Rouge et Or to a 32-10 road win over the Carabins. Named an RSEQ all-star in each of her first two campaigns with Laval, the 5-foot-5 fly-half earned game-MVP honours thanks to her hat trick.
Katrina Ward, a soccer player from Wilfrid Laurier, was also nominated for the women’s award.
Lao, a first-year liberal arts student from Unionville, Ont., was sensational in his OUA debut as he scored two goals in each of the Lions’ first two conference games, including both game winners. Last Saturday in Windsor, the 5-foot-9 midfielder tied the contest in the 82nd minute and tallied the difference maker six minutes later to lift No. 2-ranked York to a 2-1 season-opening victory over the Lancers. The super freshman was at it again on Monday, adding a pair in an 8-0 rout of visiting Brock.
Soccer players Sebastian Munro of McGill and Brett Lewis of Saskatchewan were the other male nominees.
