Rams advance to OUA final and national tournament
Martin Dabrowski (Barrie, Ont.) netted his first goal of the playoffs and fifth of the season right before the halftime whistle blew, giving the Rams a 1-0 lead heading into the locker room.
Ryerson dominated possession in the first half and racked up five shots in the first 45 minutes. Defensively the Rams were sound all game long, denying the Lancers a shot on goal.
Luka Lee (Toronto) had Ryerson’s best chance for an insurance marker with 15 minutes remaining but his sliding shot slipped right by the right post.
Windsor pressed for an equalizer in the dying moments and after a couple offside calls, they finally broke through for a developing four-on-two opportunity. Veteran defender Jacob O’Connor (Ottawa, Ont.) was up to the task, however, blocking the Lancers’ shot and clearing it to safety.
“We were just holding on with everything we had there. We knew how close we were and we’ve been fighting for this all year…everyone just wanted to close that game out,” said O’Connor following the game. “The main goal was to get to nationals but of course we want to beat York tomorrow so we’re ready for that.”
The Ryerson Rams will play in the OUA final tomorrow afternoon in search of their first OUA banner.
“I’m really happy for the guys. This is a three, four year project in the works. It was a tight game, 1-0, the signs of a good defensive team (and) I’m happy for them,” commented associate coach Fil Prostran following the game.
“Having a big win like this, a big milestone for the program (the first time qualifying for the national tournament), you want them to be happy but you don’t want them to be content and over celebratory because they have a chance to do something Ryerson has never done and that’s win a banner tomorrow,” said Prostran.
The Rams will take on the top seeded team from the west and No. 3 nationally ranked York Lions in tomorrow’s OUA championship game beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Birchmount Stadium.
The championship game, along with the bronze medal game between Carleton and Windsor at 11:00 a.m. will be webcast live here.
