RAVENS TO HOST NATIONALS IN 2008
The announcement was made on Monday by the national governing body of university sport, which heard bid presentations from four potential hosts on Saturday. Carleton edged Atlantic University Sport (AUS), the University of British Columbia from Vancouver, and McMaster University from Hamilton for the rights to the event.
The AUS will host the national tournament in Halifax for the 24th consecutive year in March 2007 before handing the reins to the Ottawa-based institution. The last time the event was held outside of Nova Scotia's capital was in 1983, when the University of Waterloo hosted the championship.
Carleton, which will partner with Capital Sports Properties Inc. to organize the tournament, will host the championship at Scotiabank Place, home of the NHL's Ottawa Senators. Capital Sports Properties Inc. owns both the Senators and Scotiabank Place.
"CIS looks forward to working with Carleton University and Capital Sports to take this outstanding event to the next level," says CIS Chief Executive Officer, Marg McGregor. "With the event being hosted in Ottawa, basketball fans from Ontario, Quebec and Northern U.S. will be exposed to exceptional basketball, in a world class facility at family affordable rates."
"The selection committee was very impressed with the caliber of the bids received," adds McGregor. "Atlantic University Sport has done an exceptional job over the past 23 years in nurturing the CIS men's basketball championship into the outstanding property it has become. We owe AUS and all their dedicated volunteers and staff a huge debt of gratitude."
Carleton Director of Athletics, Drew Love is thrilled about the opportunity to host the event in the nation's capital.
"We are obviously ecstatic, and are looking forward to working with the CIS in order to make these the best-ever nationals," says Love. "We are very grateful to the AUS for elevating the standards to where they are today, and our objective is now to borrow the event for three years and return it to the CIS in even better shape."
"In the meantime, our Ravens hope they will have the chance to travel to Halifax next year, and get a shot at their fifth consecutive national title."
The CIS will announce later this week the successful bidders for upcoming national championships in the sports of women's basketball, women's and men's hockey, track and field, and wrestling.
