BROCK ROLLERCOASTER CONTINUES, WHILE KLOOSTRA HEATS UP FOR THE LANCERS
Without the services of all-star point guard Brad Rootes, who was gone with a knee injury, head coach Ken Murray got 18 points from second-year Orangeville, ON native Jesse Tipping in a thriller of a game. Brock trailed McMaster by 14 at the break but rallied to outscore the hosts 44-30 in the second half, before taking control in a tight overtime. Mike Kemp hit his fourth three-pointer of the night late in the extra frame to put the Badgers up 80-77. Kemp finished with 16, while 2005 CIS Player of the Year Kevin Stienstra scored 15 points and added 16 boards. Ben Katz led the Marauders with 16.
McMaster's heartache wasn't limited to the Brock game, as they were also defeated in overtime by the Guelph Gryphons this week. Second-year guard Nick Pankerichan, a native of Hamilton, scored 19 points to help lead the Gryphs to the win. Big man J.R. Bailey added 13 points and 11 rebounds. McMaster was led by Martin Ajayi's 20 points, while Adam Steiner chipped in 17 more and 11 rebounds. Mac has lost two in a row for the second time this season after opening the year with defeats to Carleton and Ottawa.
Brock, McMaster and the Gryphons are all tied at 11-5 in the West following the weekend. Laurier's Wade Currie and Andrew MacKay combined for 11 threes en route to scoring 20 and 17 points respectively in the Hawks' win over the Badgers. Rootes had 30 points, six rebounds and six assists in a losing cause.
Chatham, ON native Kevin Kloostra had one of the most explosive performances of the OUA season as he tallied 36 points for the Windsor Lancers in an 85-60 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves Friday. Kloostra was unstoppable, shooting 71.4 per cent from the floor, which included five of six shots made from long range. Warren Gilchrist had 17 for Lakehead. York's Rohan Steen also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. The Paladins had strong offensive performances from Nathan Tucker and Damian Auxilly, who poured in 22 and 21 points respectively. The Lions improved to 10-7 on the year the next night as they slipped past the Queen's Golden Gaels 62-61. Ruach, the third-leading scorer in the OUA with 17.94 points in 17 league games, scored another 22 to pace the Lions in the win. Brendan O'Leary led the Gaels with 14 points, while Simon Mitchell added 13.
The Toronto Varsity Blues stay in the CIS Top 10 was short-lived as the Blues dropped their second and third straight games in the brutal stretch through Ottawa where they took on the No. 2 Gee-Gees and the No. 3 Ravens. Toronto, which lost to York last week, got 25 points from guard Paul Sergautis but couldn't stop a balanced Ottawa offence in 72-63 defeat Friday. Chris Swenson and Jermaine Campbell had 13 points each for Ottawa. The Gee-Gees also cranked it up on defence and racked up 12 steals. Toronto's luck wasn't much better at the Ravens' nest as Osvaldo Jeanty torched the Blues for 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists in a 74-52 win, Carleton's 15th of the season. Nick Magalas paced U of T with 11 points.
Graham Jarman scored 21 points, including a 4-for-4 night from beyond the three-point line, as the Waterloo Warriors stayed in the West mix with a big 70-66 home win over Guelph. Jarman added seven assists and five rebounds in the game. The Warriors were 10 of 11 from the line, including 8-for-9 in the crucial second half. Waterloo also roughed up the Hawks 85-65 Wednesday as Jarman once again led the way with 18 points and 10 assists. Chris Edwards had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Waterloo, which sits at 11-6 in the division.
