ALLIN RESCUES LANCERS AT THE BUZZER
Rich Allin (Chatham, Ontario) scored a putback on a miss from his brother, Greg, as the buzzer sounded to give the Lancers a thrilling one-point victory over the visiting Varsity Blues. Toronto missed two fouls shots in the final 10 seconds of the game to give Windsor the opportunity to steal the victory. It was a battle of CIS Top 10 teams as No. 7 Windsor and No. 9 Toronto provided fans with a top-tier matchup early in the OUA season. The Lancers fell behind by nine points in the first five minutes, but responded with a 7-0 run to close the gap to two points. With only a few minutes remaining in the half, Windsor made a couple of costly turnovers to give Toronto a 46-38 lead at the break. The Varsity Blues shot an astonishing 67 per cent form the field in the first half. The Blues finished the game shooting .559 (33-59) from the field but a horrific .222 (2-9) from the charity stripe. The battle of the boards played a huge factor in the game, not just on the final play, as Windsor outrebounded Toronto 48-31, including 21-4 on the offensive glass. Third-year guard Greg Surmacz (Peterborough, Ontairo) posted his second double-double in as many nights with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Homegrown guard Ryan Steer led the team with 17 points and 11 assists. Dwayne Grant scored a Toronto-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds. Third-year forward Mohammad Safarzadeh (Thornhill, Ontario) and veteran guard/forward Ben Katz (Toronto) each had 11 points apiece. The Lancers completed a perfect week by giving Toronto its second consecutive loss of the season.
Wilfrid Laurier 79, Laurentian 77 (OT)
Rookie post Andrew Pennycook (Toronto) drained his first career triple on a broken inbound play with 1.8 seconds remaining in overtime to give Wilfrid Laurier the exciting 79-77 win. Regulation time ended with similar excitement as Golden Hawks guard/forward Matt Walker (Waterloo) was successful on three straight free throws after being fouled on a desperation three-point attempt with just three seconds left on the clock. The Golden Hawks won despite shooting just .391 (27-69) from the field. Wilfrid Laurier had four players in double figures, led by Jeff Mitchell who finished with a career-high 16 points, all in the first half. Second-year guard Jesse MacDonald (Brantford, Ontario) added 15 points while Walker finished with 13 and rookie forward Evan Eliason (Guelph, Ontario) scored 12 points. Laurentian forward Jason Brown recorded game highs of 23 points and nine rebounds.
