LANCERS TAKE OUT NO. 8 BROCK 71-58
The loss to Windsor was Brock's second of the week after dropping a tight 61-56 decision to the Guelph Gryphons Wednesday. The Badgers were coming off a dramatic 86-84 OT win over the McMaster Marauders last weekend but struggled against their West rival, led by guard J.S Espositio's 16 points. JR Bailey had a solid night in the paint for the Gryphons as he added 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. The depleted Brock squad got 19 points from second-year forward Jesse Tipping, while Stienstra added 12 points and 13 boards. Brock is now 11-7 in league play, tied for third place with the Waterloo Warriors. Guelph wasn't immune to the upset, however, as the Laurier Golden Hawks got a game-high 17 points from Omar Miles in a 71-60 win over the Gryphons Saturday in Waterloo. Wade Currie had 14 points for the Hawks. Bailey and guard Nick Pankerichan had 14 points each for Guelph.
The McMaster Marauders recovered from their heartbreaking loss to Brock last week by posting a pair of convincing wins, 80-60 over Laurier Wednesday and 77-48 over the Western Mustangs Saturday. Four Marauders hit double digits in points against the Hawks, including 15 from third-year Hamilton, ON native John Obrovac. Adam Steiner added 13 to go along with nine boards, while Currie paced Laurier with 19 points. The McMaster offence showed a nice balance again versus Western as five more players hit double digits. Ben Katz led the way this time as he went 6-for-9 from the floor for 16 points, while Steiner added 15. Martin Ajayi chipped in 10 points and a game-high seven assists.
Steady veteran Osvaldo Jeanty had 17 points to lead the No. 3 Carleton Ravens to an easy 87-61 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs. Aaron Doornekamp added 10 points and eight rebounds for the defending CIS champs. Matt Brown led the Voyageurs with 19 points and seven rebounds. Carleton ensured the Lions wouldn't make it back-to-back upsets as they went into the Tait MacKenzie Centre and dominated York 71-51. Doornekamp led all scorers with 18 points, while grabbing eight rebounds. Despite a tough shooting night, Tut Ruach led the Lions with 15 points, while forward Dan Eves made his return to the lineup this week and had 11 points and eight rebounds in 32 minutes of play.
Elsewhere around the OUA, Tudor Lupea, a freshman from Bucharest, Romania, had 20 points to lead the Toronto Varsity Blues past the RMC Paladins 93-44 Friday. Jordan Balaban was 3-for-3 from the three-point line as he scored 16 points to help the Queen's Golden Gaels defeat the Ryerson Rams 83-72. Graham Jarman scored 22 for the Warriors as they beat the Lakehead Thunderwolves 75-69 Friday. Warren Gilchrist poured in 22 for Lakehead. The teams met again Saturday and the Wolves earned a weekend split as Scott Seeley had 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Four other Lakehead players hit double digits, while Michael Davis led Waterloo with 16. Ottawa rebounded from the York loss with a 77-70 win over Laurentian, while Igor Bakovic scored 23 points and Joseph Imbrogno had 21 in Ryerson's lopsided 93-60 defeat of RMC. Paul Sergautis scored 13 points to lead the Varsity Blues in a 74-67 win over Queen's. Simon Mitchell had 21 points for the Gaels.
