LIONS TAKE DOWN NO.2 GEE-GEES IN OT
York centre Jordan Foebel had a monster game, recording a double-double with 22 points and 21 rebounds, while shooting 10-of-14 from the floor. Guard Tut Ruach also recorded a double-double with a game-high 25-points and 11 assists in 42 minutes of action.
In the first half, Ottawa's Marko Jovic came out with the hot hand scoring nine of his 15 points. Foebel responded by hooking up with Rohan Steen on numerous trips down the court. The duo connected on some clutch plays to keep the Lions within striking distance. With the Gee-Gees leading 25-21, Ruach sucked in the Ottawa defence with a strong drive and dropped the ball off to Dan Eves for the lay-up. With strong zone defence, the Lions preceded to outscore the Gee-Gees 14-9 to take a 35-34 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Lions started to pull away, extending the lead to as much as 10 points. The Gee-Gees stormed back with the help of clutch three-point shots by Sean Peter and Jermaine Campbell late in the half. With the score 74-72 in favour of the Lions, Ottawa's Alexander Duford tipped in a Alex Mcleod shot with less than seven seconds left on the clock to tie the contest and send it to overtime.
In the extra period, Foebel and Ruach stepped up for the Lions. With four minutes remaining, Eves dropped a three-pointer off a Rohan Steen offensive rebound, giving the Lions an 81-76 lead. On the next possession, Foebel grabbed a loose ball and completed the lay-up at the other end. Ruach went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe late in overtime to cement to upset.
Alex Mcleod scored a team-high 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting for Ottawa. Campbell added 12 points and nine rebounds, while Marko Jovic notched 15 points and three steals.
The Lions finished the game shooting 44.1 per cent from the field, including 33.3 per cent from beyond the arc. The Lions were also 31-of-47 from the free-throw line, compared to Ottawa's 5-of-9. The Gee-Gee's finished with 45 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from three-point range.
York's next game comes against the No. 3 ranked and three-time CIS National Champion Carleton Ravens on Saturday night, while Ottawa visits Laurentian (6-11). Both games tip-off at 8pm.
